What Causes This?

Discord audio usually cuts out or crackles when Windows is fighting over the wrong playback or recording device, using an unstable sample rate, or applying audio enhancements that don’t play nicely with your headset or speakers. It can also happen when your audio driver is outdated, CPU usage spikes while Discord is running, or Discord’s own voice processing features conflict with your hardware. In some cases, USB headsets, Bluetooth devices, and third-party audio software are the real trigger.

Common Symptoms

  • Voices in Discord sound robotic, choppy, or crackly
  • Audio drops for a second and then comes back
  • Only Discord has the problem while other apps sound normal
  • Your mic or headset works fine until you join a voice channel or call
  • The issue gets worse during gaming, streaming, or high CPU usage

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check that Discord is using the correct audio device

    1. Open Discord.
    2. Click the gear icon next to your username to open User Settings.
    3. Select Voice & Video.
    4. Under Input Device and Output Device, choose your actual headset, microphone, or speakers instead of Default.
    5. Test audio again in a voice channel or call.
  2. Disable Discord audio processing features

    1. In Discord > User Settings > Voice & Video, scroll down.
    2. Turn off Echo Cancellation, Noise Suppression, and Automatic Gain Control.
    3. If you see Audio Subsystem, try switching it to another option, then restart Discord.
    4. Test again. These features help in some setups but can cause distortion in others.
  3. Set the same sample rate in Windows

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to System > Sound.
    3. Click your playback device, then open Additional device properties if available.
    4. In the Advanced tab, set the Default Format to a common option like 16 bit, 48000 Hz or 24 bit, 48000 Hz.
    5. Do the same for your recording device.
    6. Uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device if Discord keeps cutting out.
    7. Click Apply and OK.
  4. Turn off Windows audio enhancements

    1. Stay in your device properties in Settings > System > Sound.
    2. Look for Audio enhancements and set it to Off.
    3. If your device has an Enhancements tab in classic sound properties, check Disable all enhancements.
    4. Test Discord again.
  5. Update or reinstall the audio driver

    1. Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right-click your audio device and select Update driver.
    4. If that doesn’t help, choose Uninstall device, restart your PC, and let Windows reinstall it.
    5. If you use a USB headset or motherboard audio, also check the manufacturer’s site for the latest driver.
  6. Check for system overload

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    2. On the Processes tab, look for high CPU, Memory, or Disk usage while Discord is crackling.
    3. Close heavy apps like browsers with many tabs, game launchers, RGB tools, or recording software.
    4. If the issue only happens under load, restart your PC and test Discord before opening other apps.
  7. Try a different port or connection

    1. If you use a USB headset, move it to another USB port.
    2. If you use Bluetooth, reconnect the device or test it wired if possible.
    3. Avoid USB hubs during testing, since they can cause intermittent audio problems.
