Audio crackling during high CPU usage usually happens because Windows can’t process audio data fast enough in real time. When the processor is overloaded by background apps, startup programs, browser tabs, updates, or driver issues, the audio buffer can underrun and produce pops, crackles, or stuttering. Outdated audio drivers, aggressive power-saving settings, and high DPC latency from faulty drivers can also make the problem worse.
Common Symptoms
- Audio pops, crackles, or skips when opening apps or multitasking
- Sound distortion during gaming, streaming, or video calls
- CPU usage spikes to high levels in Task Manager
- Music or video playback stutters when Windows is busy
- The problem gets worse after startup or while updates run in the background
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check CPU usage in Task Manager
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Click More details if needed.
- On the Processes tab, click the CPU column to sort by usage.
- Look for apps using unusually high CPU, such as browsers, game launchers, antivirus scans, or update tools.
- If you find a non-essential app causing spikes, select it and click End task.
- Press
-
Disable unnecessary startup apps
- In Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab.
- Review apps marked Enabled, especially ones with High impact.
- Right-click any app you don’t need at startup and choose Disable.
- Restart your PC and test audio again.
-
Update or reinstall your audio driver
- Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click your audio device and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If the issue started recently, right-click the device, choose Properties, open the Driver tab, and try Roll Back Driver if available.
- If updating doesn’t help, choose Uninstall device, restart your PC, and let Windows reinstall the driver.
-
Change your power mode to reduce CPU throttling
- Press
Windows + Ito open Settings. - Go to System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, select Best performance.
- If you’re on a laptop, test while plugged in, since battery-saving modes can reduce performance and affect audio playback.
- Press
-
Turn off audio enhancements
- Press
Windows + I, then go to System > Sound. - Select your output device, such as speakers or headphones.
- Find Audio enhancements and set it to Off.
- Also turn off Spatial sound temporarily to test whether processing effects are causing the crackling.
- Press
-
Install Windows updates and let background tasks finish
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install any pending updates.
- If Windows is currently downloading or installing updates, wait until it finishes, then restart.
- Background update activity can temporarily cause CPU spikes and audio issues.
-
Reduce background load while using audio-heavy apps
- Close unused browser tabs, overlays, launchers, and recording tools.
- Pause large downloads, cloud sync apps, or antivirus scans.
- If the crackling only happens in one app, lower that app’s quality settings or close other programs while using it.
