Antimalware Service Executable is the main background process for Microsoft Defender, shown as MsMpEng.exe in Task Manager. High CPU usage usually happens when Defender is running a full scan, checking a large number of files in real time, or getting stuck scanning certain folders repeatedly. It can also spike after a Windows update, when another security tool conflicts with Defender, or when your PC is cluttered with temporary files and startup apps that keep the system busy.
Common Symptoms
- Task Manager shows Antimalware Service Executable using a lot of CPU
- The PC feels slow when opening apps, browsing, or starting up
- Fans run louder than usual and the laptop gets warmer
- CPU usage spikes during idle time or while copying files
- Games or video calls stutter even when nothing heavy is open
How to Fix It Manually
-
Confirm Defender is the process using CPU
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Click More details if needed.
- Under the Processes tab, look for Antimalware Service Executable.
- If CPU usage stays high for more than 10–15 minutes, continue with the steps below.
-
Let any active scan finish, then restart the PC
- If Defender is in the middle of a scan, stopping it can make the problem come back later.
- Save your work and restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart.
- After rebooting, wait a few minutes and check Task Manager again.
-
Schedule scans for a time when you are not using the PC
- Press Windows key, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
- Go to Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Windows Defender.
- Double-click Windows Defender Scheduled Scan.
- Open the Triggers tab, click Edit, and set a time when the PC is usually idle.
- Click OK, then OK again.
-
Add exclusions for folders Defender scans too often
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Click Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection settings, click Manage settings.
- Scroll to Exclusions and click Add or remove exclusions.
- Add large folders that change constantly, such as developer build folders, VM folders, or game cache folders.
- Do not exclude Downloads, Documents, or other folders where new files from the internet are stored unless you fully trust them.
-
Check for another antivirus causing conflicts
- Press Windows key + R, type
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Look for third-party antivirus or security suites you no longer use.
- Uninstall any old or duplicate security software, then restart the PC.
- Running multiple real-time antivirus tools at once can cause constant rescanning.
- Press Windows key + R, type
-
Update Windows and Defender
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install everything available.
- Then open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates.
- Click Check for updates to make sure Defender has the latest definitions and fixes.
-
Reduce background load and clean temporary files
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off apps you do not need at startup.
- Then go to Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files.
- Select safe items such as temp files and thumbnails, then click Remove files.
- Less background activity gives Defender fewer files and processes to monitor at once.
