What Causes This?

Discord usually crashes on startup when its local cache or app data becomes corrupted, especially after an update or an improper shutdown. It can also happen if Discord is conflicting with Windows compatibility settings, outdated graphics drivers, overlay software, or security tools that block parts of the app. In some cases, damaged system files or a broken Discord installation are the real cause.

Common Symptoms

  • Discord opens briefly, then closes immediately
  • You see a blank gray screen before the app crashes
  • Discord gets stuck on “Starting” and never fully loads
  • An error appears after launching Discord from the desktop or Start menu
  • Discord works in the browser, but the Windows app keeps crashing

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Fully close Discord and end background processes

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • In the Processes tab, look for Discord and any Update.exe process related to Discord.
    • Select each one and click End task.
    • Try opening Discord again. If it still crashes, continue below.
  2. Clear Discord’s cache and local app data

    • Press Windows + R, type %appdata%, and press Enter.
    • Find the Discord folder, right-click it, and choose Delete.
    • Press Windows + R again, type %localappdata%, and press Enter.
    • Delete the Discord folder there too.
    • Restart your PC, then launch Discord. This forces Discord to rebuild its files from scratch.
  3. Run Discord without compatibility settings

    • Right-click the Discord shortcut and choose Properties.
    • Open the Compatibility tab.
    • Uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode for: if it is enabled.
    • Also uncheck Run this program as an administrator unless you specifically need it.
    • Click Apply, then OK, and try launching Discord again.
  4. Disable overlays and conflicting background apps

    • Close apps that commonly interfere with Discord, such as MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, RGB control software, or third-party overlays.
    • If you use antivirus software other than Microsoft Defender, temporarily disable it and test Discord.
    • If Discord opens normally after this, add Discord to the allowed list in that app before turning protection back on.
  5. Reinstall Discord cleanly

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps.
    • Find Discord, click the three dots, and choose Uninstall.
    • After uninstalling, repeat Step 2 to remove leftover Discord folders.
    • Download the latest version of Discord from the official website and install it again.
  6. Check for Windows and driver updates

    • Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
    • Install any pending updates and restart your PC.
    • Then update your graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, since startup crashes can be tied to display-related issues.
    • If Discord still crashes, run Command Prompt as administrator and enter: sfc /scannow to check for damaged system files.
