What Causes This?

Outlook usually crashes on startup because something in its startup process is broken or conflicting. The most common causes are faulty COM add-ins, a damaged Outlook profile, corrupted navigation pane settings, or a problem with the local Outlook data file (.OST or .PST). In some cases, Office updates, graphics acceleration issues, or damaged Office program files can also cause Outlook to close as soon as it opens.

Common Symptoms

  • Outlook opens briefly, then closes or freezes
  • You see “Microsoft Outlook has stopped working”
  • Outlook only opens in Safe Mode
  • Clicking the Outlook icon does nothing after a splash screen
  • Outlook crashes before your mailbox fully loads

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Make sure Outlook is fully closed

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
    • In the Processes tab, look for Microsoft Outlook
    • If it’s listed, select it and click End task
    • Also close any Office or Microsoft 365 apps that are still running
  2. Start Outlook in Safe Mode

    • Press Windows + R to open Run
    • Type outlook.exe /safe and press Enter
    • If Outlook opens normally in Safe Mode, the problem is usually an add-in
    • Leave Outlook open and continue to the next step
  3. Disable Outlook add-ins

    • In Outlook, click File > Options > Add-ins
    • At the bottom, next to Manage, select COM Add-ins and click Go
    • Uncheck all add-ins, then click OK
    • Close Outlook and open it normally
    • If it works, re-enable add-ins one at a time until you find the one causing the crash
  4. Reset the Navigation Pane

    • Press Windows + R
    • Type outlook.exe /resetnavpane and press Enter
    • This clears corrupted navigation pane settings that can stop Outlook from loading
    • Try opening Outlook again normally
  5. Create a new Outlook profile

    • Close Outlook
    • Press Windows + S, type Control Panel, and open it
    • Set View by to Large icons or Small icons
    • Click Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles
    • Click Add, create a new profile, and follow the prompts to add your email account
    • Under When starting Microsoft Outlook, use this profile, choose Prompt for a profile to be used or select the new profile as default
    • Open Outlook and test the new profile
  6. Repair Office

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older versions of Windows)
    • Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office
    • Click the three dots or select the app, then choose Modify
    • Run Quick Repair first
    • If Outlook still crashes, repeat the process and run Online Repair
  7. Check for Windows and Office updates

    • Open any Office app if possible, then go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now
    • For Windows, open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates
    • Restart your PC after installing updates
