Microsoft Edge Startup Boost is designed to preload parts of the browser in the background so Edge opens faster. On some PCs, that means Edge keeps background processes, helper services, and extensions loaded even after you close all browser windows. If Edge is also set to keep running background apps, memory use can stay higher than expected and slowly add up over time.
Common Symptoms
- Edge processes still appear in Task Manager after you close the browser
- RAM usage stays unusually high when no browser window is open
- Your PC feels slower after startup or after using Edge
- Background apps or games have less available memory
- Edge reopens quickly, but system performance is worse in the background
How to Fix It Manually
-
Turn off Startup Boost in Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, then select Settings.
- In the left sidebar, click System and performance.
- Find Startup boost and switch it Off.
-
Stop Edge from running in the background
- Stay in Settings > System and performance.
- Look for Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.
- Turn this setting Off.
- This is one of the most common reasons Edge keeps using RAM after you exit.
-
Close leftover Edge processes in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Click Processes.
- Look for Microsoft Edge entries even though the browser is closed.
- Select each Edge process and click End task.
- If they come back immediately, restart your PC after changing the settings above.
-
Disable unnecessary Edge extensions
- Open Edge and type
edge://extensionsin the address bar, then press Enter. - Turn off extensions you do not need, especially shopping tools, VPNs, coupon finders, and tab managers.
- Close Edge completely and check Task Manager again.
- Some extensions keep helper processes active in the background.
- Open Edge and type
-
Prevent Edge from launching at Windows startup
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then click Startup apps.
- If you see Microsoft Edge or msedge listed as enabled, select it and click Disable.
- This can reduce preloaded browser activity right after boot.
-
Restart your PC and verify memory use
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- After signing back in, wait a minute, then open Task Manager again.
- Check whether Edge is still using memory in the background without being opened.
- If RAM use is lower, the Startup Boost and background settings were the cause.
-
Reset Edge if the problem continues
- Open Edge and go to Settings > Reset settings.
- Click Restore settings to their default values.
- Confirm the reset.
- This can fix stuck background behavior caused by a bad extension or broken setting without deleting your bookmarks.
