What Causes This?
Microsoft Teams often keeps several background processes running even after you close the window, especially if it is set to stay active in the system tray for notifications and faster startup. Memory use can also grow over time because of cached data, multiple chat and meeting sessions, add-ins, or a stuck update process. On some PCs, the newer Teams app and WebView-based components can keep using RAM even when you are not actively using the app.
Common Symptoms
- Teams still shows high memory usage in Task Manager when minimized or closed to the tray
- Your PC feels slower even when Teams is not open on screen
- RAM usage stays high after meetings, screen sharing, or long work sessions
- Fans spin up or battery drains faster while Teams runs in the background
- Other apps become sluggish when Teams is idle
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check how much memory Teams is using
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Click Processes.
- Look for Microsoft Teams and check the Memory column.
- If you see multiple Teams-related processes, expand the app entry to review them.
- Open Task Manager with
-
Fully quit Teams instead of leaving it in the tray
- In the bottom-right corner of the taskbar, click the system tray arrow if needed.
- Right-click the Microsoft Teams icon.
- Click Quit.
- Go back to Task Manager and confirm the Teams processes are gone or reduced.
-
Stop Teams from running in the background at startup
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Go to Apps > Startup.
- Find Microsoft Teams and switch it Off.
- You can also open Teams, click your profile picture > Settings > General, and turn off options like Auto-start Teams or Open application in background if available.
- Open Settings with
-
Clear the Teams cache
- First, fully quit Teams from the system tray.
- Press
Windows + R, type%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, and press Enter. - Delete the contents of folders such as Cache, Code Cache, GPUCache, and tmp.
- Restart Teams and check memory usage again.
- If you use the newer Teams app and that path is missing, open
Windows + R, enter%localappdata%\Packages, and look for Teams-related cache folders, or reinstall the app in the next step.
-
Update or reinstall Teams
- Open Teams and check for updates from the menu or Settings if the option is available.
- If memory use stays high, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Teams, click the three dots, then choose Uninstall.
- Restart your PC, then install the latest version of Teams from Microsoft.
-
Restart your PC and watch for other apps affecting Teams
- Restart Windows to clear stuck background processes.
- After rebooting, open Task Manager again and compare memory usage before and after launching Teams.
- If RAM spikes only when certain apps are open, browser extensions, antivirus tools, or meeting add-ins may be contributing.
