Firefox uses RAM to keep tabs, site content, media, and extensions ready to respond quickly. When you open many tabs, memory use naturally climbs, but it can get excessive if some tabs contain heavy web apps, videos, or pages that keep running scripts in the background. Add-ons, corrupted session data, and occasional memory leaks in Firefox or a specific site can also cause RAM usage to stay high even after you stop using those tabs.
Common Symptoms
- Firefox memory usage keeps rising the longer it stays open
- Windows feels slow or starts lagging when many tabs are open
- Tabs reload unexpectedly when you switch back to them
- Task Manager shows Firefox using several GB of memory
- Fans spin up or the PC becomes sluggish while browsing
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check how much memory Firefox is using
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Click More details if Task Manager opens in compact view.
- Under the Processes tab, find Firefox and check the Memory column.
- If Firefox is using a very large amount of RAM, continue with the steps below.
-
Close or identify heavy tabs
- In Firefox, press Shift + Esc to open Firefox’s built-in Task Manager.
- Click the Memory column to sort by usage.
- Look for tabs, extensions, or subframes using unusually high memory.
- Close the worst offenders first, especially streaming sites, web apps, and pages with lots of ads or live content.
-
Restart Firefox and disable tab restore overload
- Save any work in open tabs.
- Click the menu button in Firefox, then choose Exit.
- Reopen Firefox and see if memory usage returns to normal.
- If Firefox always restores a huge session, go to Menu > Settings > General and review startup behavior. Reducing the number of tabs restored at launch can help.
-
Disable or remove problematic extensions
- In Firefox, press Ctrl + Shift + A to open Add-ons and themes.
- Click Extensions.
- Disable extensions you do not need, especially tab managers, ad-heavy shopping helpers, VPN add-ons, or anything recently installed.
- Restart Firefox and check Task Manager again. If memory improves, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the cause.
-
Use Firefox’s memory cleanup tools
- Click the address bar, type about:memory, and press Enter.
- Click Minimize memory usage.
- This forces Firefox to release memory it no longer needs and can help after long browsing sessions.
-
Update Firefox
- Click Menu > Help > About Firefox.
- Firefox will automatically check for updates and install them if available.
- Restart the browser after updating. Newer versions often fix memory leaks and performance bugs.
-
Reduce background load in Windows
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable apps you do not need running all the time.
- In Task Manager, check whether your system is already low on available memory because of other programs.
- If your PC has limited RAM, keeping fewer tabs open at once may be necessary.
