Saved password traces on Windows usually come from web browsers, Windows Credential Manager, and autofill or sign-in data that stays behind after you log out or change a password. Even if you delete a password in one app, related cache files, cookies, form data, or stored credentials may still remain elsewhere on the PC. This is most common on shared computers, after browser sync issues, or when old login data keeps auto-filling unexpectedly.
Common Symptoms
- A website or app keeps auto-filling an old password
- Windows or a browser signs you in automatically when you do not want it to
- Deleted passwords reappear after restarting the browser
- Shared PCs still show saved logins or account suggestions
- You want to remove password traces before selling or handing off the computer
How to Fix It Manually
-
Close your browsers and apps
- Save any open work first.
- Close Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and any app that may store login details.
- If a browser will not close, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the app, and click End task.
-
Remove saved passwords from Windows Credential Manager
- Press Windows + S, type Credential Manager, and open it.
- Click Web Credentials and review saved website logins.
- Click each entry you want to remove, then select Remove.
- Click Windows Credentials and remove any old app, network, or Microsoft account credentials you no longer want stored.
-
Clear saved passwords and autofill data in Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, then go to Settings > Profiles > Passwords.
- Delete any saved passwords you no longer want.
- Then go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data > Choose what to clear.
- Select Passwords, Autofill form data, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files, then click Clear now.
-
Clear saved passwords and autofill data in Google Chrome
- Open Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu > Settings > Autofill and passwords > Google Password Manager.
- Delete the saved passwords you want removed.
- Then go to Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data.
- Under Advanced, select Passwords and other sign-in data, Autofill form data, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files, then click Delete data.
-
Clear saved passwords in Mozilla Firefox
- Open Firefox.
- Click the menu button > Passwords.
- Remove any saved logins you do not want.
- Then go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Under Cookies and Site Data, click Clear Data.
- Under History, clear recent history and include Form & Search History, Cache, and Cookies if needed.
-
Turn off sync if passwords keep coming back
- In your browser settings, check whether sync is enabled for passwords.
- If removed passwords reappear, pause or disable sync temporarily, delete the saved passwords again, then sign back in.
- This prevents another device from restoring old login data.
-
Restart the PC and test
- Restart Windows after clearing credentials and browser data.
- Open the affected website or app and confirm it no longer auto-fills or signs in automatically.
