What Causes This?

Windows apps store temporary files, thumbnails, login data, and other cached content to load faster. Over time, that cache can grow too large, become outdated, or get corrupted, which can make apps slow, glitchy, or take up unnecessary disk space. This is common with Microsoft Store apps, browsers, chat apps, and media apps that constantly download and refresh content.

Common Symptoms

  • An app feels slow to open or freezes more than usual
  • Apps show old data, broken images, or loading errors
  • You notice storage space shrinking without a clear reason
  • Microsoft Store apps fail to update or behave inconsistently
  • A specific app crashes until you reset or reinstall it

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Close the app you want to clean

    • Save your work first.
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Find the app under Processes, select it, and click End task if it is still running.
  2. Clear temporary files through Windows Settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to System > Storage > Temporary files.
    • Let Windows scan, then check items such as Temporary files, Thumbnails, and other safe cache-related categories.
    • Click Remove files.
  3. Reset a Microsoft Store app

    • Open Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps.
    • Find the app, click the three dots next to it, then choose Advanced options.
    • Scroll down and click Terminate.
    • Click Repair first.
    • If the app still has problems, click Reset.
      • This clears the app’s local data and cache.
      • You may need to sign in again afterward.
  4. Clear the Microsoft Store cache

    • Press Windows + R to open Run.
    • Type wsreset.exe and press Enter.
    • A blank Command Prompt window may appear for a moment.
    • Wait for Microsoft Store to reopen automatically.
  5. Delete user temp files manually

    • Press Windows + R, type %temp%, and press Enter.
    • In the folder that opens, press Ctrl + A to select everything.
    • Press Delete.
    • If Windows says some files are in use, click Skip for those files.
    • Repeat the process with temp in the Run box if you want to check the system temp folder too.
  6. Clear browser and app-specific cache if needed

    • For browsers like Chrome or Edge, open the browser settings and look for Clear browsing data.
    • For apps like Discord, Spotify, or Teams, sign out and check the app’s settings for Clear cache or Reset app options.
    • If no cache option exists, uninstalling and reinstalling the app can remove leftover cached data.
  7. Restart your PC

    • Click Start > Power > Restart.
    • This clears locked temporary files and helps Windows reload the app with fresh cache data.
