What Causes This?

Windows stores font cache files to speed up how text and typefaces load in apps, menus, and browsers. If those cache files become outdated, corrupted, or stuck after a Windows update, app install, or font change, text can display incorrectly or not load at all. This is especially common after installing or removing custom fonts.

Common Symptoms

  • Fonts look blurry, broken, or inconsistent across apps
  • Newly installed fonts do not appear in programs
  • Text shows as squares, blank spaces, or the wrong typeface
  • Apps like Word, Photoshop, or browsers display font errors
  • Font changes do not apply even after restarting the app

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Close apps that use fonts

    • Save your work and close programs like Word, Photoshop, browsers, and design tools.
    • This helps prevent Windows from locking font cache files while you remove them.
  2. Stop the Windows Font Cache service

    • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • In the Services window, find Windows Font Cache Service.
    • Right-click it and choose Stop.
    • If you also see Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 3.0.0.0, stop that too.
  3. Delete the main font cache files

    • Open File Explorer with Win + E.
    • Go to: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local
    • If you do not see the AppData folder, click View > Show > Hidden items.
    • Delete files that start with:
      • FontCache
    • For example, you may see files like FontCache-System.dat or similar. Delete all matching files in that folder.
  4. Delete the user font cache

    • In File Explorer, go to: C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local
    • Replace YourUsername with your actual Windows account name.
    • Look for: FontCache or files related to font cache, if present.
    • Delete them.
  5. Restart your PC

    • Click Start > Power > Restart.
    • Windows will rebuild the font cache automatically during startup.
  6. Check if the issue is fixed

    • Reopen the app where the font problem appeared.
    • If fonts still look wrong, open Settings > Personalization > Fonts and confirm the font is installed correctly.
    • If needed, uninstall and reinstall the affected font.
  7. Run a system file check if the problem continues

    • Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
    • Type: sfc /scannow
    • Press Enter and wait for the scan to finish.
    • This can repair damaged Windows files that may be affecting font rendering.
