What Is Signal Desktop?

Signal Desktop is the official desktop app for the Signal private messaging service from Signal Messenger LLC. It lets you send and receive Signal messages on your computer, including chats, attachments and notifications, using your existing Signal account.

On Windows, macOS and Linux, it is a normal user app rather than a system component. If it is not running, your operating system and hardware will still work normally. Opening it manually when you need it is fine.

Is It Safe?

Usually, yes. Signal Desktop from Signal Messenger LLC is a legitimate app and is widely used for secure messaging.

That said, messaging apps can be imitated by malware. If you are unsure, check that the app opens from its normal install location and that the publisher is Signal Messenger LLC. On Windows, right-click signal.exe, open Properties, then check Digital Signatures if that tab is present. If the file is in an unusual folder, has no valid signature, or behaves nothing like Signal, investigate it.

Signal Desktop itself is not a Windows, macOS or Linux system process, so it does not need special protection from being disabled at startup.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

Usually, yes if you do not need instant notifications when you sign in.

Disabling Signal Desktop at startup is generally safe. The app will still work normally when you open it yourself. The main trade-off is that you may not see new message alerts until you launch Signal.

Keep it enabled at startup if you rely on Signal for work, time-sensitive messages or you want it ready in the background after login. Otherwise, it is a reasonable startup item to turn off.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

Signal Desktop may use more CPU or memory while it is:

  • syncing recent conversations
  • downloading or indexing attachments
  • showing notifications
  • updating itself
  • handling large chats or many media files

Short spikes are normal after launch or after reconnecting to the internet. If usage stays high for a long time, try closing and reopening the app, installing updates, or checking whether a very large conversation or attachment download is active.

If signal.exe is using heavy resources constantly and the file is not from Signal Messenger LLC, treat that as suspicious and verify the file location and signature.

How to Disable or Remove It

If Signal Desktop appears in startup, you can disable it without uninstalling the app.

  • Windows: Disable it in Task Manager's Startup apps, Windows Settings, or Kudu's Startup Manager if it is listed there.
  • macOS: Turn off its login item in System Settings or remove its Launch Agent if one is used.
  • Linux: Disable its autostart entry in your desktop environment or XDG autostart settings.

To remove it completely, uninstall Signal Desktop through your normal app removal method for your platform. That removes the app, but it does not remove your operating system messaging support because Signal is not a system component.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show whether Signal Desktop is linked to a startup entry and let you disable or remove that startup item without uninstalling the app. If Signal is using a lot of CPU or memory, Kudu's Performance Monitor can confirm the exact process and help you see whether the load is brief or constant.

If you are not sure whether a signal.exe file is legitimate, Kudu's Malware Scanner can help flag suspicious persistence or rule matches, but it should be used alongside your antivirus rather than instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I disable Signal Desktop at startup without breaking Signal?
Yes. Signal Desktop will still work when you open it manually. You just will not get desktop notifications until it is running.
Is signal.exe a system file?
No. It is an application process for Signal Desktop, not a required Windows, macOS or Linux system process.
Should I end Signal Desktop if it is using a lot of memory?
You can close or end it if it is unresponsive, because it is not a critical system process. Unsent work in the app could be interrupted, so reopening it afterward is usually the next step.
