What Is Razer Central?

Razer Central is Razer's desktop software platform for managing Razer apps and hardware. On Windows, razercentralservice.exe is part of the background service layer used by tools such as Razer Synapse, account sign-in, updates, device detection, and some cloud-linked settings.

If you use a Razer mouse, keyboard, headset, laptop features, RGB lighting, macros, or profile switching, this service may help those features work smoothly. If you do not use Razer hardware or you rarely open Razer software, it is usually not essential at startup.

Is It Safe?

Usually yes — if it is the real file from Razer Inc. The expected publisher is Razer Inc.

Because background services can be imitated, check the file before trusting it:

  • In Task Manager, right-click Razer Central or razercentralservice.exe and choose Open file location.
  • Check Properties > Digital Signatures and confirm it is signed by Razer Inc.
  • Be more cautious if the file is in an unusual folder, has no valid signature, or keeps returning after removal.

On its own, Razer Central is not a Windows system component. It should not be treated like a critical Microsoft process.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

For most people, yes, disabling it at startup is safe to try. Razer software can usually start when you open it manually.

Keep it enabled if:

  • you rely on Synapse profiles, macros, or RGB settings right after sign-in
  • your Razer device features do not load properly unless its background services are running
  • you want automatic updates or account sync in the background

Disable it if:

  • you do not use Razer hardware anymore
  • you want fewer background apps at boot
  • you notice it starting with Windows even though you rarely open Razer apps

Disabling startup is different from uninstalling. It only stops it from launching automatically.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

Razer Central can use more CPU or memory than expected when it is:

  • checking for updates
  • syncing profiles or signing in
  • scanning for connected Razer devices
  • stuck after a failed update or service error

If usage stays high for more than a few minutes, restart the Razer app or reboot Windows. If that does not help, update or reinstall Razer Synapse/Central from Razer's official source. If you no longer use the software, uninstalling it is reasonable.

How to Disable or Remove It

To disable it at startup on Windows:

  • Open Task Manager > Startup apps and look for a Razer entry.
  • You can also check Settings > Apps > Startup.
  • If it was added another way, check Task Scheduler or Razer's own settings for auto-start options.

To remove it completely:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  • Uninstall Razer Central, Razer Synapse, or related Razer components you no longer need.

If you still use Razer hardware, uninstalling may remove lighting, macro, or profile features.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show whether Razer Central is actually set to start with Windows and where that startup entry comes from. Use Startup Manager to disable or remove the entry, and Performance Monitor to see whether razercentralservice.exe is using unusual CPU or memory in real time.

If the file location or signature looks wrong, Kudu's Malware Scanner can help check for suspicious persistence or known bad patterns. If you uninstall Razer software, Kudu's System Cleaner can help review leftover cache files without touching personal files.

Frequently asked questions

Will disabling Razer Central break my Razer mouse or keyboard?
Basic input should still work. Advanced features like RGB, macros, custom profiles, or cloud sync may not load until you open the Razer software.
Is razercentralservice.exe a virus?
Not usually, if it is the genuine file signed by Razer Inc. If it is in a strange location or lacks a valid signature, investigate it.
Should I uninstall Razer Central if I no longer use Razer hardware?
Yes, that is reasonable. If you do not use Razer devices or software, uninstalling it can reduce background activity and startup clutter.
