What Is Razer Synapse?
Razer Synapse is Razer's configuration software for supported keyboards, mice, headsets and other accessories. It is used to manage device settings such as lighting, DPI, button assignments, macros, profiles and firmware-related options.
On Windows, Razer installs background components and services so Synapse can detect devices and apply settings automatically. On macOS, support is more limited than on Windows, but Razer software may still load at login for supported devices and features.
razer synapse service.exe is associated with that background software. If you use Razer hardware features that need software control, this process may appear even when the main app window is closed.
Is It Safe?
Usually yes, if it is the real Razer software from Razer Inc. Synapse is not a Windows or macOS system component, but it is a normal vendor utility.
Because background services can be imitated, verify the file if you are unsure. Check that it launches from Razer's program files location on Windows or from Razer's app files on macOS, and confirm the publisher/signature shows Razer Inc. If the file is in an unusual folder such as Downloads, Temp, AppData subfolders you do not recognize, or a random user-writable location, treat it as suspicious and investigate further.
It is generally safe to keep installed if you use Razer peripherals. If you do not own any Razer hardware, or you no longer use Synapse features, it may be unnecessary.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
Usually yes, if you do not need your Razer settings applied immediately at sign-in. Startup loading is optional for many users.
Disable it at startup if:
- you rarely open Synapse
- you do not use macros or per-app profiles
- you do not care if RGB or custom settings apply only after opening the app
- you are troubleshooting slow logins or background CPU use
Keep it enabled if:
- your mouse DPI, key remaps or macros must work right away
- you rely on automatic profile switching
- your device lighting or battery notifications depend on Synapse
Disabling startup does not usually remove the app. You can still open Synapse manually when needed.
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
Synapse can use more CPU or memory than expected when it is updating, syncing profiles, scanning for devices, applying lighting effects or after a failed update. Conflicts with other RGB/peripheral tools can also cause repeated device polling.
Try these checks:
- restart Synapse or reboot the computer
- disconnect and reconnect the Razer device
- update Synapse and your device firmware from Razer
- close other RGB or peripheral control apps temporarily
- if usage stays high, reinstall Synapse
If the process name matches but the file location or signature does not, investigate it instead of assuming it is legitimate.
How to Disable or Remove It
On Windows, disable Synapse from startup in Task Manager, Windows Settings, or a startup tool such as Kudu. You may also find related entries in the Startup folder, Run keys or Task Scheduler. To remove it completely, uninstall Razer Synapse from Installed Apps and then restart.
On macOS, remove or disable its login/background item in System Settings if present, or uninstall the Razer app from Applications using Razer's uninstaller if one is provided.
If you still use the hardware, disabling startup is usually a better first step than uninstalling.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can show whether Razer Synapse is set to start automatically and where that startup entry comes from. On Windows it checks Run keys, the Startup folder and Task Scheduler; on macOS it checks Launch Agents.
If Synapse is using too many resources, Kudu's Performance Monitor can show its CPU and memory use and help you link the running process to its startup item. If you decide you do not need it, Kudu can disable the startup entry without uninstalling the app.
Frequently asked questions
- Will my Razer mouse or keyboard stop working if I disable Synapse at startup?
- The device should still work for basic input. You may lose automatic macros, lighting, profile switching or custom settings until you open Synapse.
- Is Razer Synapse required by Windows or macOS?
- No. It is vendor software for Razer hardware, not an operating system component.
- Why does Synapse come back after I close it?
- It may have a background service or another startup entry that relaunches it. Check startup items and scheduled/background components instead of only closing the app window.

Kudu’s Startup Manager lists Run keys, Startup folder entries, scheduled tasks, Launch Agents, and XDG autostart items in one place. On Windows it also shows each item’s boot time impact.
