What Is NVIDIA GeForce Experience?
NVIDIA GeForce Experience is NVIDIA’s companion app for GeForce graphics cards on Windows. It can notify you about driver updates, help install NVIDIA graphics drivers, optimize supported game settings, and provide features such as the in-game overlay, screenshots, recording and streaming.
It is not the core display driver itself. Your NVIDIA graphics driver can still work without GeForce Experience running at startup. On many systems, it is mainly a convenience app rather than a required part of Windows boot.
Is It Safe?
Usually, yes. If it is published by NVIDIA Corporation and installed with your NVIDIA graphics software, it is normally legitimate.
Because well-known apps can be impersonated, check the file location if you are unsure. A real copy is typically installed under C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation or a similar NVIDIA folder. If the file is running from a temporary folder, Downloads, AppData, or another unusual location, treat that as suspicious.
You can also right-click the file, open Properties, and check Digital Signatures for NVIDIA Corporation. If the signature is missing or invalid, investigate before allowing it at startup.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
Usually, yes if you do not use its extra features every day. Disabling it at startup is generally safe, and you can still open it manually when you want to check for driver updates or change settings.
Keep it enabled at startup if you rely on:
- the NVIDIA in-game overlay
- ShadowPlay or gameplay recording
- automatic driver notifications
- game optimization prompts
Disable it if you want fewer background apps and do not need those features all the time. This should not disable the basic NVIDIA display driver that your GPU needs.
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
GeForce Experience may use more CPU or memory while checking for updates, scanning for installed games, preparing the overlay, or handling recording features. Short spikes after sign-in or after a driver update are not unusual.
If usage stays high, common causes include:
- the in-game overlay or recording tools
- a stuck update check
- a driver update that did not install cleanly
- conflicts with other overlay apps
If it keeps using a lot of resources, close the app and reopen it. You can also disable its startup entry and launch it only when needed. If the process name or file location looks wrong, investigate it rather than assuming it is genuine.
How to Disable or Remove It
To stop it launching with Windows, disable its startup entry in Task Manager or a startup tool such as Kudu. Some systems may also show related NVIDIA helper entries separately.
If you want to remove it completely, uninstall NVIDIA GeForce Experience from Installed apps or Apps & features in Windows. Leave the NVIDIA graphics driver installed unless you specifically intend to remove or replace it.
If you only want fewer background features, you may be able to turn off the overlay or notifications inside the app instead of uninstalling it.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can show whether GeForce Experience has a startup entry and let you disable it without removing the app. On Windows, Startup Manager can also show boot impact when Windows provides it.
If GeForce Experience is using too much CPU or memory, Kudu’s Performance Monitor can show the exact process, its PID, and whether it links back to a startup item. If you suspect a fake copy, Kudu can help you spot unusual persistence and investigate further with its Malware Scanner.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need NVIDIA GeForce Experience for my graphics card to work?
- Usually no. Your NVIDIA display driver can work without GeForce Experience running at startup or even being installed.
- Will disabling GeForce Experience at startup break my games?
- Usually not. You may lose automatic notifications, overlay features or recording until you open the app again.
- How do I tell if GeForce Experience is fake?
- Check that the file is in an NVIDIA program folder and that its digital signature is from NVIDIA Corporation. If it runs from an unusual location or has no valid signature, investigate it.

Kudu’s Startup Manager lists Run keys, Startup folder entries, scheduled tasks, Launch Agents, and XDG autostart items in one place. On Windows it also shows each item’s boot time impact.
