What Is MEGAsync?
MEGAsync is the desktop sync client for the MEGA cloud storage service. It signs in to your MEGA account, syncs selected folders between your device and the cloud, and can handle file transfers and notifications.
On Windows, macOS and Linux, it is a normal user app rather than a system component. If you use MEGA to keep files in sync or upload downloads automatically, MEGAsync may be set to start when you sign in so syncing begins right away.
Is It Safe?
Usually, yes. If megasync.exe is from Mega Limited and you installed MEGA yourself, it is generally safe. It is not required by Windows, macOS or Linux.
Because cloud apps can use background access to files and the network, it is worth checking that it is the real app if you do not recognize it. On Windows, open Task Manager, right-click megasync.exe, choose Open file location, and check its Properties for the publisher. If the file is in an unusual folder or the signature/publisher does not match Mega Limited, investigate further.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
Usually, yes if you do not need constant syncing. Disabling it at startup does not uninstall MEGA. You can still open the app manually when you want to sync or transfer files.
Keep it enabled if you rely on MEGA for:
- automatic syncing of work or personal folders
- background uploads or downloads
- immediate access to current cloud files after sign-in
Disable it if you:
- rarely use MEGA
- only open it for occasional transfers
- want fewer background apps starting with your session
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
MEGAsync often gets busy when it is actively syncing, scanning large folders, hashing files, or catching up after your device was offline. CPU and disk activity can also rise after you add many files, move a synced folder, or change lots of small files at once.
Memory use may grow with large transfer queues or very large synced libraries. If usage stays high for a long time, check whether it is stuck retrying transfers, rescanning a folder, or syncing a location with constant file changes from another app.
If you do not need it right now, quitting the app will stop syncing until you reopen it.
How to Disable or Remove It
To stop it launching at sign-in, disable its startup entry in your OS or in MEGA's own settings if that option is available in your version.
If you want to remove it completely, uninstall MEGA through your normal app removal tool:
- Windows: Settings > Apps
- macOS: Applications, or the app's uninstall method if provided
- Linux: your distribution's package manager
Uninstalling the app stops syncing, but it does not automatically delete your cloud account or all local files. Review any synced folders before removal.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can show whether MEGAsync is set to launch at startup and let you disable or remove the startup entry without uninstalling the app. On Windows, it can also show the startup source and boot impact when available.
If MEGAsync is using too much CPU or memory, Kudu's Performance Monitor can confirm the process, show its PID, and help you compare it with other running apps before you decide to quit it.
Frequently asked questions
- Will disabling MEGAsync at startup delete my files?
- No. Disabling startup only stops the app from opening automatically when you sign in. Your local files and MEGA account stay in place unless you remove them separately.
- Can I still use MEGA if I disable startup?
- Yes. You can open MEGAsync manually whenever you want to sync or transfer files. It just will not run in the background automatically after sign-in.
- Is megasync.exe a Windows system process?
- No. It is a third-party app from MEGA, not part of Windows. That means it is safe to disable at startup if you do not need automatic syncing.
