What Is JetBrains Toolbox?

JetBrains Toolbox is JetBrains' app manager for its developer tools, such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm and other JetBrains IDEs. It handles installing IDEs, switching versions, applying updates and opening projects from one place.

On Windows its executable is typically jetbrains-toolbox.exe. On macOS and Linux it serves the same general role: a launcher and updater for JetBrains apps, not a system component.

Is It Safe?

Yes, if it is the real JetBrains Toolbox from JetBrains s.r.o. It is a legitimate developer utility, not malware by itself.

If you want to verify it, check that the app came from JetBrains and that the executable is in a normal app location rather than a random temp or downloads folder. On Windows, right-click the file, open Properties, and review the Digital Signatures tab if present. If you see jetbrains-toolbox.exe running from an unusual location or without a valid JetBrains signature, investigate it.

JetBrains Toolbox is not required for Windows, macOS or Linux to run. Disabling its startup entry will not break the operating system.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

Usually, yes if you want fewer background apps. JetBrains Toolbox is optional at startup.

Disabling it normally means:

  • JetBrains IDEs can still be opened directly
  • Toolbox will not check for updates immediately after sign-in
  • You may need to open Toolbox manually when you want to install or update an IDE

Keep it enabled if you rely on automatic update checks, version management or quick access to multiple JetBrains tools throughout the day. If you rarely use JetBrains apps, disabling startup is usually reasonable.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

Short bursts of CPU, disk or network activity are normal when Toolbox is:

  • checking for IDE updates
  • downloading or patching an IDE
  • indexing its installed tools list
  • syncing settings related to managed JetBrains apps

High usage should usually settle down after updates finish. If it stays busy for a long time, open Toolbox and check whether an update is stuck. Restarting Toolbox can help. If the process keeps consuming resources even when idle, update Toolbox itself or reinstall it from JetBrains.

How to Disable or Remove It

If you only want to stop it launching at sign-in, disable its startup entry instead of uninstalling it.

  • Windows: disable JetBrains Toolbox in Task Manager's startup apps list or in a startup tool such as Kudu.
  • macOS: remove or disable its login/startup item in your login items or launch agent list.
  • Linux: disable its XDG autostart entry if one exists.

To remove it completely, uninstall JetBrains Toolbox like a normal app from your OS. That removes the manager, but it may not automatically remove every JetBrains IDE installed through it, so review those separately.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show whether JetBrains Toolbox is set to launch at startup and let you disable or remove that entry without uninstalling the app. On Windows, Kudu can also show the startup source and boot impact when available.

If Toolbox seems busy, Kudu's Performance Monitor can confirm its CPU and memory use and help you tell whether the load is coming from Toolbox itself or from a JetBrains IDE you opened.

If you are unsure whether the file is genuine, Kudu's Malware Scanner can help flag suspicious persistence or unusual copies, but it should be used alongside your antivirus rather than instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I uninstall JetBrains Toolbox and keep my IDEs?
Often yes, but it depends on how you manage those IDEs afterward. The IDEs may still run, but you lose Toolbox's update and version management features.
Will disabling JetBrains Toolbox at startup stop IntelliJ or PyCharm from working?
No. You can still open the IDEs directly. You may just need to launch Toolbox manually when you want updates or to manage installations.
Is JetBrains Toolbox malware if it uses the internet in the background?
Not by itself. It normally uses the network to check for updates and download JetBrains tools, but an unusual file location or missing signature is worth checking.
