Windows and many browsers use advertising IDs, activity data, and suggested content settings to personalize ads and recommendations. These options are often enabled by default during setup, and some apps can use them unless you turn them off manually. Browser ad personalization can also come from synced account settings, cookies, and privacy features that are not configured tightly enough.
Common Symptoms
- Ads in Windows apps seem based on your activity or interests
- Suggested content, tips, or promotions appear in Start, Settings, or other Windows areas
- Websites show repeated targeted ads after browsing related products
- Browser privacy settings feel scattered or hard to verify
- You want less tracking but are not sure which Windows settings control it
How to Fix It Manually
-
Turn off Windows advertising ID
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security.
- Click General under Windows permissions.
- Turn off Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID.
-
Disable other Windows personalization and tracking options
- In the same General section, review the other toggles.
- Turn off Let websites show me locally relevant content by accessing my language list if you want fewer personalized suggestions.
- Turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app to reduce Microsoft promotions and recommendations.
-
Reduce diagnostic and activity-based personalization
- In Settings, go back to Privacy & security.
- Click Diagnostics & feedback.
- Set Send optional diagnostic data to Off if it is enabled.
- Turn off Tailored experiences to stop Microsoft from using diagnostic data for personalized tips, ads, and recommendations.
-
Check app permissions and background behavior
- In Privacy & security, review sections such as Activity history, Search permissions, and General.
- Turn off settings that you do not want contributing to personalized experiences.
- If you use a Microsoft account, also review your privacy dashboard at account.microsoft.com/privacy and clear ad-related or activity data if needed.
-
Turn off ad personalization in your browser
- In Microsoft Edge, click the three dots in the top-right corner and open Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Tracking prevention, choose Balanced or Strict.
- Scroll down and disable optional features that personalize web content or shopping suggestions if you do not want them.
- Open Cookies and site permissions and block or limit third-party cookies if you want stronger ad-tracking reduction.
-
Clear browser data that supports ad targeting
- In Edge, press Ctrl + Shift + Delete.
- Choose a Time range such as All time.
- Select Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files.
- Click Clear now.
- If you use Chrome or Firefox, do the same in their privacy settings and review any signed-in Google or Mozilla account personalization options.
-
Restart your PC and test
- Restart Windows after changing these settings.
- Open a few apps and your browser, then check whether targeted suggestions and personalized ads have decreased.
- If settings seem to turn back on, make sure you are signed into the correct Microsoft account and that browser sync is not restoring older preferences.
