OneDrive Known Folder Backup turns on when Windows or OneDrive is set to protect your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders. This usually happens during Windows setup, when signing in to OneDrive, or after a Microsoft prompt asking you to “back up your important folders.” Once enabled, Windows redirects those folders to your OneDrive location so files are automatically synced to the cloud.
Common Symptoms
- Files on Desktop, Documents, or Pictures show OneDrive sync icons
- Your file paths changed to something like
C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Documents - New files are automatically uploaded to OneDrive
- You get OneDrive storage warnings or sync notifications
- Turning off OneDrive sync does not move your folders back to local storage
How to Fix It Manually
-
Open OneDrive settings
- Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area near the clock.
- If you do not see it, click the up arrow to show hidden icons.
- Select the gear icon and click Settings.
-
Turn off Known Folder Backup
- In OneDrive Settings, open the Sync and backup tab.
- Click Manage backup.
- For Desktop, Documents, and Pictures, click Stop backup for each folder you do not want synced.
- Confirm each prompt. OneDrive may warn that files will remain in OneDrive unless you move them manually.
-
Check where your folders are now
- Open File Explorer with Windows+E.
- In the left pane, right-click Documents and choose Properties.
- Open the Location tab.
- If the path points to
C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Documents, click Restore Default. - Click Apply, then choose Yes to move files to the default local folder.
- Repeat this for Desktop and Pictures if needed.
-
Move any remaining files out of OneDrive
- In File Explorer, open your OneDrive folder.
- Check Desktop, Documents, and Pictures inside OneDrive.
- If files are still there, copy or move them to:
C:\Users\YourName\DesktopC:\Users\YourName\DocumentsC:\Users\YourName\Pictures
- Make sure your files appear in the local folders before deleting anything from OneDrive.
-
Stop OneDrive from starting backup prompts again
- Open OneDrive Settings again.
- Under Sync and backup, review options like Save photos and videos to OneDrive or similar backup prompts and turn off anything you do not want.
- If you do not use OneDrive at all, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft OneDrive, click the three dots, and choose Uninstall.
-
Restart File Explorer or sign out and back in
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and choose Restart.
- This refreshes folder paths and icons so you can confirm the change.
