Windows laptops often slow down on battery because the system switches to a power-saving mode that limits CPU speed, reduces background activity, and lowers overall performance to extend battery life. At the same time, too many startup apps, browser tabs, sync tools, and background processes can keep using memory, disk, and CPU even when you are unplugged. Low battery health, outdated drivers, and thermal throttling can also make a laptop feel much slower away from the charger.
Common Symptoms
- Apps take longer to open when the charger is unplugged
- Video calls, browsing, or streaming feel laggy on battery
- The fan gets loud, but performance still drops
- Windows animations stutter or freeze briefly
- Battery drains quickly while the laptop feels unusually slow
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check your power mode
- Click the battery icon on the taskbar, or go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, choose Balanced or Best performance if available.
- If your laptop is set to a battery saver or efficiency-focused mode, Windows may intentionally reduce speed.
-
Turn off Battery Saver when you need performance
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Battery saver.
- If it is on, turn it off temporarily.
- Battery Saver can limit background activity and reduce performance to stretch battery life.
-
Close heavy background apps
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- In the Processes tab, click the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns to sort by usage.
- Look for apps using a lot of resources, such as browsers with many tabs, cloud sync apps, game launchers, or update tools.
- Select anything unnecessary and click End task.
-
Disable unnecessary startup programs
- In Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab.
- Right-click apps you do not need at startup and choose Disable.
- Focus on non-essential items like chat apps, launchers, helper tools, and updaters.
- Restart your PC and test battery performance again.
-
Check battery and thermal settings
- Go to Settings > System > Power & battery and review battery usage.
- If one app is draining a lot of power, close it or reduce how often it runs in the background.
- Make sure air vents are not blocked and the laptop is not overheating, since heat can force the CPU to slow down on battery.
-
Update graphics, chipset, and battery-related drivers
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Batteries, and System devices.
- Right-click key devices and choose Update driver.
- Also install Windows updates from Settings > Windows Update, since power management fixes often come through driver and firmware updates.
-
Clean up storage and temporary files
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Turn on Storage Sense if it is off.
- Click Temporary files, review the list, and remove unneeded items.
- A cluttered drive can make Windows feel slower, especially on older laptops.
