A Windows laptop that slows down only when plugged in usually points to a power, performance, or background activity issue. The most common causes are an aggressive power plan switching behavior, battery/charger problems, thermal throttling from extra heat while charging, or background tasks starting when AC power is connected. In some cases, Windows Update, cloud sync, antivirus scans, or manufacturer power management software become more active as soon as the laptop is plugged in.
Common Symptoms
- The laptop feels normal on battery but becomes laggy within minutes of plugging in
- Fans get louder and the laptop runs hotter while charging
- Apps stutter, freeze, or take longer to open when connected to power
- CPU, disk, or memory usage suddenly spikes after plugging in
- The charger is connected, but performance is worse instead of better
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check Task Manager for spikes after plugging in
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Click More details if needed.
- Watch the Processes tab while you plug in the charger.
- Sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk to see what jumps to the top.
- If you notice a specific app, updater, sync tool, or antivirus process using heavy resources, close it or pause it temporarily.
- Press
-
Review your power mode and advanced power settings
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, try Balanced instead of a manufacturer “Performance” mode that may increase heat.
- Then click Additional power settings if available.
- Select your active plan, then choose Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Expand Processor power management and make sure Maximum processor state is not set unusually low on Plugged in.
- Also check that System cooling policy is set to Active.
-
Check for overheating while charging
- If the laptop gets hot only when plugged in, charging may be adding enough heat to trigger CPU throttling.
- Make sure the charger is the correct wattage for your laptop.
- Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface so vents are not blocked.
- Clean dust from vents and fans if airflow looks restricted.
- If your laptop has a manufacturer utility such as Dell Power Manager, Lenovo Vantage, or MyASUS, check for a thermal or battery mode that changes behavior on AC power.
-
Test with startup apps and background syncing reduced
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Disable non-essential startup items with high impact.
- Open OneDrive or other cloud apps and pause syncing temporarily.
- If Windows Update or Microsoft Store downloads start when plugged in, let them finish or pause them to test performance.
-
Update battery, chipset, and power-related drivers
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Batteries and System devices.
- Right-click Microsoft AC Adapter, Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and relevant chipset devices, then choose Update driver.
- Also install BIOS, chipset, and power management updates from your laptop maker’s support page.
-
Test the charger and battery health
- Try another compatible charger if possible.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
powercfg /batteryreport - Open the generated battery report and check for poor battery health or charging issues.
- A failing battery or underpowered charger can cause unstable performance when plugged in.
