   • Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
   • Go to:
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
   • In the right pane, look for values such as DisableAntiSpyware or DisableRealtimeMonitoring.
   • If they exist and are set to 1, right-click and delete them, or change the value to 0.
   • Close Registry Editor and restart your PC.
   • Be careful editing the registry. Only change the values listed above.

4. Make sure required Windows services are running

   • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
   • Find Security Center and Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service.
   • Double-click each service and make sure Startup type is set correctly and the service is not disabled.
   • If available, click Start to run the service.
   • If a service is missing or cannot start, that usually points to policy damage or interference from old security software.

5. Repair damaged system files

   • Click Start, type cmd, then right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
   • Run these commands one at a time:
     1. sfc /scannow
     2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
   • Wait for both scans to finish, then restart your PC.

6. Check Windows Security again

   • Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
   • Try opening Virus & threat protection.
   • If 0x800704EC is gone, turn Real-time protection back on if needed.
