Slack notifications on Windows usually stop working because either Slack itself is muted, Windows is blocking app notifications, or Focus Assist/Do Not Disturb is suppressing alerts. In some cases, background app restrictions, outdated Slack app files, or corrupted notification settings can also prevent banners, sounds, or taskbar alerts from appearing. If Slack is running but Windows is not letting it notify you properly, messages can arrive silently with no pop-up at all.
Common Symptoms
- New Slack messages appear only when you open the app
- No banner notifications show in the bottom-right corner
- Slack plays no sound for direct messages or mentions
- Notifications work sometimes, then randomly stop
- Other apps notify normally, but Slack does not
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check Slack’s own notification settings
- Open Slack.
- Click your profile picture in the top-right, then select Preferences.
- Click Notifications.
- Make sure notifications are enabled for the messages you want, such as All new messages or Direct messages, mentions & keywords.
- Confirm you are not paused in Do Not Disturb. If you see a pause status, turn it off.
-
Make sure Windows notifications are enabled for Slack
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Notifications.
- Make sure Notifications is turned On.
- Scroll down to the app list and find Slack.
- Turn Slack notifications On.
- Click Slack and make sure Show notification banners, Show notifications in notification center, and Play a sound when a notification arrives are enabled.
-
Turn off Focus Assist or Do Not Disturb
- In Settings, go to System > Notifications.
- If your version of Windows shows Do not disturb, turn it Off.
- On some systems, open Settings > System > Focus assist and set it to Off.
- Also check whether automatic rules are enabled, such as suppressing notifications during certain hours, gaming, or when duplicating your display.
-
Allow Slack to run properly in the background
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If Slack is not running, start it from the Start menu.
- In Slack, click your profile picture > Preferences > Windows app and make sure it is allowed to launch when you sign in, if available.
- If you use battery-saving features on a laptop, open Settings > System > Power & battery and make sure aggressive battery saving is not limiting background activity.
-
Restart Slack and Windows Explorer
- Close Slack completely by right-clicking the Slack icon in the system tray and choosing Quit Slack.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Under Processes, find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and choose Restart.
- Reopen Slack and test notifications by sending yourself a message or asking a coworker to mention you.
-
Update or reinstall Slack
- Open Slack and check for updates if the option is available in the app menu.
- If notifications still fail, press Windows + I and go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Slack, select it, and choose Uninstall.
- Download and reinstall the latest version of Slack, then sign back in and test again.
