Excel usually crashes during open or save because something is interfering with how it loads files or writes data. Common causes include broken add-ins, corrupted Excel settings, damaged workbook files, printer driver issues, low system resources, or recent Windows or Office changes. In some cases, security software or cloud sync tools can also interrupt file access and trigger a crash.
Common Symptoms
- Excel closes suddenly when you open a workbook
- Excel freezes or crashes when you click Save or Save As
- Only one specific file crashes Excel, while others open normally
- Excel opens in Safe Mode but crashes in normal mode
- The problem started after an Office update, new add-in, or system change
How to Fix It Manually
-
Start Excel in Safe Mode
- Press Windows + R to open Run.
- Type
excel /safeand press Enter. - Try opening or saving the file again.
- If Excel works in Safe Mode, an add-in or startup setting is likely causing the crash.
-
Disable Excel add-ins
- Open Excel.
- Click File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage, select COM Add-ins and click Go.
- Uncheck all add-ins and click OK.
- Restart Excel normally and test the problem file.
- If Excel stops crashing, re-enable add-ins one at a time until you find the one causing the issue.
-
Test the file and save location
- Try opening a different Excel file. If only one file crashes, that workbook may be corrupted.
- Copy the problem file to your Desktop and open it from there.
- If the crash happens during saving, use File > Save As and save it with a new name in a local folder such as Documents.
- If the file is stored in OneDrive, SharePoint, or a network drive, temporarily save it locally to rule out sync or network issues.
-
Turn off hardware graphics acceleration
- Open Excel and go to File > Options > Advanced.
- Scroll to the Display section.
- Check Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
- Click OK, close Excel, and reopen it.
- This can help if Excel crashes when rendering large or complex workbooks.
-
Repair Microsoft Office
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the list.
- Click the three dots next to it, then choose Modify.
- Run Quick Repair first.
- If the issue continues, repeat the steps and run Online Repair.
-
Check for printer and default printer issues
- Press Windows + I and go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Set Microsoft Print to PDF as the default printer temporarily.
- Open Excel and test again.
- Excel sometimes crashes on open or save because it queries the default printer driver for page layout information.
-
Update Windows and Office
- In Excel, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Then press Windows + I and go to Windows Update.
- Install pending updates and restart your PC.
- If the problem started right after an update, note that change—it may help identify the cause.
