What Is Ubisoft Connect?
Ubisoft Connect is Ubisoft’s desktop launcher for Windows. It signs you into your Ubisoft account, starts supported games, installs updates, manages cloud saves and can handle game-related background tasks.
The executable upc.exe is associated with the launcher. On a normal system, it should belong to Ubisoft and be installed with Ubisoft Connect rather than appearing in a random folder.
Is It Safe?
Usually, yes. Ubisoft Connect is legitimate software from Ubisoft.
That said, game launchers are not part of Windows, so they should only be present if you installed them or a Ubisoft game that requires them. If you do not recognize it, check the file location and digital signature. In Windows, right-click upc.exe in Task Manager or File Explorer, open its file location, then check Properties > Digital Signatures. A real copy should be signed by Ubisoft.
Be cautious if upc.exe is running from an unusual location, has no valid signature, or keeps returning after removal without any Ubisoft software installed. In that case, investigate further with your antivirus or a second-opinion malware scan.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
For most people, yes. Ubisoft Connect is usually safe to disable at startup.
Disabling it does not uninstall it. It simply stops the launcher from loading with Windows. You can still open Ubisoft Connect manually when you want to play a Ubisoft game, and the launcher should start when a game needs it.
You may want to leave it enabled if you want automatic game updates, faster access to your library, or background syncing as soon as you sign in. Otherwise, it is generally unnecessary at boot.
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
Ubisoft Connect may use more CPU, memory, disk or network activity while downloading updates, verifying game files, syncing cloud saves, showing the store, or updating itself.
Short spikes are normal during installs and updates. Constant high usage when idle is less normal. Try fully closing the launcher and reopening it, signing out and back in, or letting any pending update finish. If usage stays high, check whether it is stuck verifying files or downloading in the background.
If upc.exe is using a lot of resources while no Ubisoft game is running and no update is in progress, confirm that the file is the real Ubisoft launcher and not something impersonating it.
How to Disable or Remove It
To stop it launching with Windows, disable its startup entry in Task Manager, Windows Settings, or your launcher’s own startup setting if it offers one. Some launchers also create startup tasks, so check scheduled startup entries if it keeps coming back.
If you no longer use Ubisoft games, uninstall Ubisoft Connect from Installed apps in Windows. If you still have Ubisoft games installed, removing the launcher may stop them from launching until it is reinstalled.
Do not delete the upc.exe file by hand from its program folder. Uninstalling is the cleaner option.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can show whether Ubisoft Connect is set to start with Windows and lets you disable or remove the startup entry without hunting through multiple locations. On Windows, Startup Manager checks common startup sources including Run entries, the Startup folder and Task Scheduler.
If upc.exe is busy, Kudu’s Performance Monitor can show its CPU, memory, disk and network usage and help you confirm whether it is the process causing the slowdown. If the launcher looks suspicious or keeps reappearing, Kudu’s Malware Scanner can check for persistence and suspicious rules-based matches.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I play Ubisoft games if I disable Ubisoft Connect at startup?
- Usually yes. The launcher can still open when you start a Ubisoft game or when you launch it manually.
- Is upc.exe a Windows system file?
- No. It is part of Ubisoft Connect, not Windows, so it is not required for the operating system to run.
- Should I uninstall Ubisoft Connect if I do not use it?
- If you no longer play Ubisoft games, uninstalling it is reasonable. If you still use those games, keep it installed and just disable its startup entry if you do not want it running all the time.
