Startup Programs/RivaTuner Statistics Server

What Is RivaTuner Statistics Server? Is It Safe to Disable at Startup?

RivaTuner Statistics Server is a graphics overlay and frame limiter tool, usually safe if installed by you. It is optional at startup.

Verdict
Optional at startupRTSS is a legitimate overlay and frame rate control tool, but it does not need to start with Windows unless you use its on-screen display or limiter all the time.

What Is RivaTuner Statistics Server?

RivaTuner Statistics Server, usually shortened to RTSS, is a Windows utility from Guru3D that shows an on-screen display in games and other apps. It is commonly installed alongside MSI Afterburner, but it can also be installed on its own.

Its main jobs are showing frame rate and hardware stats on screen, limiting frame rate, and hooking into games or 3D apps so overlays can work. If you use MSI Afterburner for monitoring, RTSS is often the part that actually draws the overlay.

Is It Safe?

Yes, RTSS is generally safe if you installed it yourself or it came with a tool you recognize, such as MSI Afterburner. The normal process name is rtss.exe.

Because RTSS injects an overlay into games, some security tools or anti-cheat systems may pay attention to it. That does not automatically mean it is malicious. It does mean you should be careful if you do not remember installing it.

To check it, open Task Manager, right-click rtss.exe, and choose Open file location. A legitimate copy is usually in the RivaTuner Statistics Server program folder under Program Files. Then open Properties > Digital Signatures and confirm it is signed by Guru3D if that tab is present. If rtss.exe is running from a temporary folder, Downloads, or a user AppData path, investigate it.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

Usually, yes if you do not actively use its overlay, frame limiter, or monitoring features every time you start Windows. Disabling it at startup is normally safe. RTSS can still be opened manually when you want it.

Keep it enabled if you rely on:

  • in-game FPS or hardware overlays
  • frame rate limiting
  • MSI Afterburner monitoring that depends on RTSS
  • per-game overlay profiles that you want available automatically

If you never use those features, it is a good candidate to disable from startup.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

RTSS normally uses very little CPU and memory when idle. Higher usage usually happens when it is actively hooking into a game, polling sensors through another tool, or conflicting with another overlay.

Common causes include:

  • multiple overlays running at once
  • a game or app that RTSS does not handle well
  • aggressive monitoring update rates in related tools
  • an old RTSS or GPU driver version

If usage stays high after you close games, exit RTSS and reopen it. If the problem returns, test with other overlays disabled first.

How to Disable or Remove It

If RTSS is set to launch with Windows, disable its startup entry rather than deleting files by hand. You can also turn off auto-start inside the app if that option is available in your version.

To remove it completely, uninstall RivaTuner Statistics Server from Windows installed apps. If it came with MSI Afterburner, uninstalling one does not always remove the other, so check both entries.

Do not end RTSS while you are troubleshooting a game overlay issue unless you are okay with losing the overlay or frame limiter for that session.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show whether RTSS has a startup entry and let you disable it without uninstalling the app. In Performance Monitor, you can see whether rtss.exe is actually using CPU or memory before deciding what to do.

If RTSS is linked to another startup app such as MSI Afterburner, Kudu helps you trace that relationship so you disable the right item. If you suspect the file is not legitimate, Kudu's Malware Scanner can help check for suspicious persistence or rule matches, but it should complement your antivirus, not replace it.

Frequently asked questions

Is RivaTuner Statistics Server required for Windows?
No. It is not part of Windows and your PC can run without it. It is only needed for its overlay, monitoring, or frame limiting features.
Will disabling RTSS at startup break MSI Afterburner?
Usually no, but you may lose the on-screen display or frame limiter until RTSS is opened again. MSI Afterburner itself can still work for many tasks.
Why does RTSS show up while gaming?
RTSS often starts when a game launches because it is hooking the game to display FPS or hardware stats. That is normal if you enabled those features.
