What Is RtkAudUService?

RtkAudUService64.exe is commonly called Realtek Audio Universal Service. It is installed with Realtek onboard audio drivers on many Windows PCs, including systems where the driver package is distributed by the PC maker or bundled through another vendor.

Its job is usually to support driver-related audio features in the background. That can include things like audio device detection, jack sensing, sound effects, or the control panel app that manages Realtek audio settings. It is not a core Windows process, but it is often part of a normal audio driver installation.

Is It Safe?

Usually, yes. This startup item is commonly legitimate, and Kudu Cloud identifies it as a normal Realtek audio service seen on many devices.

That said, the name alone is not proof. Check the file location and signature if you are unsure:

  • In Kudu or Task Manager, open the file location.
  • A legitimate copy is typically inside Program Files, Windows\System32\DriverStore, or another driver-related folder.
  • Right-click the file, open Properties > Digital Signatures, and confirm it is signed.

If rtkauduservice64.exe is running from an unusual folder such as Downloads, Temp, or a user profile's random app folder, treat it as suspicious and investigate further.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

For most people: keep it enabled.

This service usually has little or no boot impact, and disabling it can break audio extras even if basic sound still works. Your speakers or headphones may continue to play audio, but features like automatic jack detection, microphone effects, audio enhancements, or the Realtek control app may stop working properly.

If you do not use any Realtek audio features and want to test without it, you can disable it and restart. If sound settings disappear or audio behavior changes, turn it back on.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

Normally it should use very little. If usage is high, common causes include:

  • a buggy or corrupted audio driver update
  • repeated device detection problems with a headset, microphone, HDMI audio device, or USB audio device
  • conflicts with audio enhancement software
  • a damaged driver package or control app

What to do:

  • Restart the PC.
  • Update or reinstall the audio driver from your PC maker or motherboard maker.
  • Disconnect and reconnect audio devices one at a time.
  • If the file location looks wrong, scan it with your antivirus and Kudu's Malware Scanner.

Do not remove random driver files by hand.

How to Disable or Remove It

If you want to test startup without it:

  • Open Kudu > Startup Manager.
  • Find RtkAudUService or rtkauduservice64.exe.
  • Disable it, then restart and test your audio.

If you want to remove it completely, uninstall or reinstall the related Realtek audio driver through Windows settings or your PC maker's support tools. That is safer than deleting the executable directly.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show whether RtkAudUService starts from the HKLM Run registry key, how much boot impact it has on Windows, and which process is actually running. You can disable the startup item, watch CPU and memory use in Performance Monitor, and open the file location to verify it.

If the file path or behavior looks wrong, use Malware Scanner to check for suspicious persistence or tampering.
