What Is NZXT CAM? Is It Safe to Disable at Startup?
NZXT CAM is NZXT's PC monitoring and device control app. It is usually safe, and startup is optional unless you need fan, RGB or cooling profiles applied.

What Is NZXT CAM?
NZXT CAM is NZXT's desktop app for Windows. It is mainly used to monitor PC temperatures, CPU/GPU load and other system stats, and to control supported NZXT hardware such as RGB lighting, fans, coolers and some power or display settings.
If you own NZXT devices, CAM may also handle profiles that apply when Windows starts. If you do not use those features often, it is usually just a convenience app rather than something Windows needs.
Is It Safe?
Usually, yes. NZXT CAM from NZXT Inc. is legitimate software. It is commonly preinstalled with NZXT systems or added when you set up NZXT accessories.
That said, safety depends on the file being the real app. In Task Manager, right-click the process and open its file location. A normal install should be in Program Files or another NZXT app folder, not a temporary folder or your Downloads folder. You can also check the file's Digital Signatures tab in Properties to confirm it is signed by NZXT Inc.
If the file is in an unusual location, has no valid signature, or you do not own NZXT hardware, treat it as suspicious and investigate further.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
Usually yes, if you do not need it immediately after sign-in. Disabling CAM at startup normally does not break Windows. You can still open it manually when you want to check temperatures or change lighting.
You may want to keep it enabled if:
- you use NZXT fan or pump profiles that should load automatically
- you want RGB or cooling settings applied as soon as you sign in
- you regularly use its hardware monitoring overlay or controls
You can usually disable it if:
- you rarely open CAM
- you only use it for occasional checks
- you want fewer background apps at login
If you disable it and notice your NZXT lighting, fan behavior or cooler settings are not being applied the way you expect, re-enable it.
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
CAM can use more CPU or memory than expected when it is polling sensors, updating overlays, checking connected devices, or after an app update. Hardware monitoring tools sometimes spike briefly when they refresh data or detect devices.
If usage stays high, try closing and reopening CAM, updating it, or turning off features you do not use, such as overlays or constant monitoring. If the process keeps consuming resources even when idle, a reinstall may help.
Do not confuse CAM with a system process. If nzxt cam.exe is using a lot of resources from an odd folder or without an NZXT signature, investigate it.
How to Disable or Remove It
To stop it launching with Windows, disable its startup entry in Task Manager > Startup apps or in Settings > Apps > Startup.
To remove it completely, uninstall NZXT CAM from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If you still need your NZXT device settings later, you can reinstall it from NZXT.
If you are unsure, disable startup first and test whether your cooling, fan or RGB setup still behaves the way you want.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can show whether NZXT CAM is set to start with Windows and lets you disable that startup item without uninstalling the app. If CAM feels heavy, Kudu's Performance Monitor can confirm its CPU and memory use and help you see whether it is actually the process causing the slowdown.
If you suspect the file is not genuine, Kudu's Malware Scanner can check for suspicious persistence and other signs that it is not the real NZXT app. Kudu can also help clean temporary app caches, but clearing caches will not guarantee better performance from CAM or your PC.
Frequently asked questions
- Does NZXT CAM need to run all the time?
- No. Many people only need it when they want to monitor temperatures or change NZXT device settings. Keep it at startup only if you rely on profiles loading automatically.
- Will disabling NZXT CAM at startup affect my fans or RGB?
- It can, depending on your NZXT hardware and how its profiles are applied. If your preferred lighting or cooling behavior stops loading at sign-in, re-enable it.
- Is nzxt cam.exe a Windows system file?
- No. It is a third-party app from NZXT, not part of Windows. That means it is generally safe to disable at startup if you do not need it there.
