What Is MSI Afterburner? Is It Safe to Disable at Startup?
MSI Afterburner is a GPU tuning and monitoring tool for Windows. It is usually safe if genuine and is optional to run at startup.
- Verdict

What Is MSI Afterburner?
MSI Afterburner is a Windows utility for graphics cards. It is commonly used to monitor GPU temperature, clock speeds, fan speed and usage, and it can also apply overclocking, undervolting or custom fan settings.
Despite the MSI name, it is not limited to MSI graphics cards. Many people use it with NVIDIA and AMD GPUs from different board partners. It often works alongside RivaTuner Statistics Server for on-screen monitoring in games.
Is It Safe?
Yes, MSI Afterburner is usually safe if it is the real program from Micro-Star International. It is widely used for GPU monitoring and tuning.
That said, any tool that changes GPU clocks, voltage or fan behavior can cause instability if you apply aggressive settings. Crashes, black screens or driver resets are usually a sign that a profile is too ambitious, not that the app itself is malware.
If you want to verify it, check that MSIAfterburner.exe is in its normal install folder under Program Files and that the file's digital signature shows Micro-Star International. If you find a file with this name in an unusual folder, treat it with caution and investigate it.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
Usually, yes, unless you actively need it at boot.
MSI Afterburner is not required by Windows, your GPU driver or normal graphics operation. If you disable it at startup, your graphics card will still work. The main reason to keep it starting with Windows is if you depend on one of these:
- a custom fan curve n- an overclock or undervolt profile that you want applied automatically
- hardware monitoring or an on-screen display every time you sign in
If you only open it occasionally to check temperatures or test settings, disabling it at startup is reasonable.
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
MSI Afterburner normally uses little memory and very little CPU while idle. Higher usage can happen when it is polling sensors frequently, drawing hardware graphs, applying overlays through RivaTuner Statistics Server, or conflicting with another monitoring tool.
If usage seems high, close any duplicate monitoring apps first. Running several tools that all read the same sensors can increase overhead. You can also check whether the on-screen display is active in games, since that can add some load.
If the process keeps using a lot of CPU even when no game is running, restart the app and check for a stuck overlay or hardware monitoring issue. If needed, disable it from startup and launch it only when you want it.
How to Disable or Remove It
To stop it launching with Windows, disable its startup entry in Task Manager, Settings, or your startup utility. Some installs also have an option inside the app to start with Windows or apply settings at startup.
If you no longer use it, uninstall MSI Afterburner from Installed apps or Apps & Features. If you also installed RivaTuner Statistics Server, that may appear as a separate app and can be removed separately.
Do not end GPU driver processes just because you are troubleshooting MSI Afterburner. The app is optional, but your graphics driver components are not.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can show whether MSI Afterburner is set to launch at sign-in and where that startup entry comes from. In Startup Manager, you can disable the entry without uninstalling the app, and on Windows you can also see its reported boot impact.
If the app seems busy, Performance Monitor can show its CPU and memory use and help you confirm whether MSI Afterburner or a related process is the one consuming resources. If something looks suspicious, Malware Scanner can help check for persistence or rules that do not match the legitimate app.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need MSI Afterburner for my graphics card to work?
- No. Your GPU will work with its normal driver even if MSI Afterburner is not installed or not running.
- Is MSI Afterburner only for MSI graphics cards?
- No. It is commonly used with many NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards, not just MSI models.
- Will disabling MSI Afterburner at startup remove my overclock?
- It can stop your custom profile from being applied automatically at sign-in. The exact behavior depends on how you configured the app and whether you saved startup profiles.
