What Is Microsoft Edge Update? Is It Safe to Disable at Startup?

Microsoft Edge Update keeps Edge and related Microsoft apps up to date. It is usually safe, but it is not essential to start with Windows.

Verdict

What Is Microsoft Edge Update?

Microsoft Edge Update is Microsoft's background updater for the Edge browser. On Windows it can appear as microsoftedgeupdate.exe, and it may be launched from a registry Run entry, scheduled tasks, or both.

Its job is to check for and install updates for Edge so the browser gets security fixes and feature updates without you having to do it manually. Some Microsoft software that uses the same update system may also rely on it.

Is It Safe?

Usually, yes. If the publisher is Microsoft Corporation and the file is the real Edge updater, it is a legitimate component.

Because malware can use familiar names, verify it if anything looks off. In Task Manager, right-click the process and open its file location. A real copy should be in a Microsoft Edge update folder under Program Files or Program Files (x86), not in a random user folder, Downloads, or Temp location. You can also check the file's Digital Signatures tab in Properties and confirm Microsoft is the signer.

If the file is in an unusual location, has no valid Microsoft signature, or keeps returning after removal in a suspicious way, investigate it further rather than trusting the name alone.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

Yes, you can if you want fewer background items at sign-in. This is optional, not required.

Disabling the startup entry usually does not stop Edge from opening when you launch the browser. The tradeoff is that Edge updates may happen later, less often, or only when Edge or another Microsoft component triggers the updater. That can leave the browser behind on security patches if you never open it.

If you use Edge regularly, leaving it enabled is reasonable. If you rarely use Edge and want to reduce startup load, disabling it is usually fine.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

The most common reason is that it is checking for, downloading, or installing an update. That activity can briefly raise CPU, disk, memory, or network use.

It can also run more than once because Microsoft uses scheduled tasks for update checks. If usage stays high for a long time, check whether Edge is updating, restart the PC, and look at the file location and signature to confirm it is genuine.

Do not remove it just because it spikes briefly during an update. Short bursts are normal; constant heavy use is not.

How to Disable or Remove It

If it appears in Startup Apps, you can disable it there. Kudu may also show it coming from the HKCU Run key or Task Scheduler, which is common for updaters.

If you disable it, leave Edge installed and update the browser manually from time to time. If you want it gone completely, uninstall Microsoft Edge only if your version of Windows allows that and you do not need it. Removing only the startup entry is usually the safer choice.

Avoid deleting updater files by hand from Program Files. That can break updates and may be reversed by the next repair or reinstall.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu's Startup Manager can show whether Microsoft Edge Update starts from the registry, Task Scheduler, or both, then let you disable the startup item without hunting through Windows tools. On Windows, it also shows boot impact so you can see why it stands out.

If the process is already running, Kudu's Performance Monitor can show its CPU and memory use and link it back to its startup entry. If the file path or behavior looks wrong, Kudu's Malware Scanner can help check for suspicious persistence or known bad patterns.

Frequently asked questions

Will Edge stop working if I disable Microsoft Edge Update at startup?
No. Edge should still open normally. The main downside is that updates may be delayed until Edge or another Microsoft component runs the updater.
Why does Microsoft Edge Update show high boot impact?
Updaters often start early, check the network, and scan installed files, which can raise startup impact. That does not automatically mean it is harmful.
Should I remove it completely?
Usually no. Disabling the startup item is the better first step if you want less background activity. Remove Edge itself only if you are sure you do not need it and Windows allows it.
