What Is Malwarebytes Service?
Malwarebytes Service (mbamservice.exe) is the main background service used by Malwarebytes on Windows. It handles core parts of the app such as real-time protection, scheduled scans, update checks and communication between the Malwarebytes interface and its protection components.
If you use Malwarebytes for active protection, this service is the part that needs to stay running. Without it, Malwarebytes may open, but its background protection and some scan features may not work correctly until the service starts again.
Is It Safe?
Yes — if it is the real Malwarebytes file. The legitimate mbamservice.exe is part of Malwarebytes and is normally safe.
Because security software runs with high privileges, it is worth checking the file if anything looks suspicious. In Task Manager, right-click Malwarebytes Service and open its file location. Then check the file's Digital Signatures tab in Properties and confirm it is signed by Malwarebytes.
If the file is in an unusual folder, has no valid signature, or you do not remember installing Malwarebytes, treat it as suspicious and investigate further. Kudu's Malware Scanner can help with that, but it does not replace your antivirus.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
For most people: no.
If you installed Malwarebytes because you want continuous protection, this service should start with Windows. Disabling it at startup can stop real-time protection, delay updates and prevent scheduled scans from running when expected.
The main exception is if you no longer use Malwarebytes and only want Windows Defender or another antivirus handling protection. In that case, removing Malwarebytes completely is usually better than just disabling its service or startup components.
If you only use Malwarebytes occasionally as an on-demand scanner, whether startup is necessary depends on your setup and subscription features. In general, leaving the service enabled is the safer choice.
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
Short spikes are normal during:
- malware definition updates
- scheduled or manual scans
- startup right after signing in
- quarantine or detection activity
Higher usage that does not settle can happen if Malwarebytes is scanning a large number of files, conflicting with another security tool, or dealing with a damaged install or update problem.
If usage stays high for a long time:
- Let any active scan finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Update Malwarebytes.
- Check whether another antivirus is scanning the same files at the same time.
- If the problem continues, repair or reinstall Malwarebytes.
Do not end mbamservice.exe just to save memory unless you are troubleshooting. That can interrupt protection.
How to Disable or Remove It
If you want it gone, uninstall Malwarebytes instead of trying to disable pieces of it.
You can remove it from Settings > Apps on Windows. After uninstalling, the service should disappear.
If Malwarebytes is still installed and you disable its service, the app may show errors or lose protection features. Kudu's Startup Manager can show related startup entries, but this item is primarily a service, not a normal startup app.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu can help you check whether Malwarebytes is affecting startup or system load without guessing:
- Performance Monitor shows if
mbamservice.exeis actually using high CPU or memory. - Startup Manager can show linked startup items if Malwarebytes also adds user startup components.
- Service Manager on Windows can show service safety guidance, but security services like this are usually best left enabled unless you are removing the app.
- Malware Scanner can help investigate suspicious lookalikes or persistence if the file location or signature seems wrong.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I end Malwarebytes Service in Task Manager?
- You can, but it is not a good idea unless you are troubleshooting. Ending it can stop Malwarebytes protection and some scan or update functions.
- Is Malwarebytes Service required for Windows?
- No, Windows itself does not require it. It is required for Malwarebytes features such as background protection and scheduled scanning.
- Why is Malwarebytes Service running when I did not open the app?
- That is normal. Security apps often run in the background so they can provide protection, updates and scheduled scans even when their main window is closed.
