Startup Programs/Corsair iCUE

What Is Corsair iCUE? Is It Safe to Disable at Startup?

Corsair iCUE manages Corsair RGB lighting, fan control and device settings. It is usually safe, and startup is optional unless you need profiles loaded.

Verdict
Optional at startupSafe for most systems, but it only needs to start with Windows or macOS if you want Corsair device profiles, lighting or controls applied automatically.

What Is Corsair iCUE?

Corsair iCUE is Corsair's control software for supported hardware and peripherals. It can manage RGB lighting, fan curves, sensor readings, mouse and keyboard settings, headset options and device firmware for Corsair products.

On some systems it also loads background services so your saved lighting or hardware profiles apply as soon as you sign in. If you use Corsair fans, an AIO cooler, a keyboard, mouse or RGB memory, iCUE may be the app that ties those settings together.

Is It Safe?

Usually yes. If the publisher is Corsair Memory Inc. and the app was installed with your Corsair hardware or from Corsair's site, iCUE is generally legitimate.

If you want to verify it, check the app's file location and code signature. On Windows, right-click icue.exe, open Properties, then check Digital Signatures and the install path. On macOS, confirm the app is signed by Corsair and came from a source you expected. If you see a similarly named file in an unusual folder, or the signature is missing or different, treat it as suspicious and investigate further.

It is not a Windows or macOS system component. Your computer does not need iCUE to boot, but your Corsair device features may not work the way you expect without it.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

Usually, startup is optional.

Keep it enabled if you want your Corsair lighting, fan control, macros or hardware profiles applied automatically at sign-in. This matters most if you rely on iCUE for cooling behavior, device remaps or RGB settings that should load without opening the app manually.

Disable it at startup if you rarely change settings, do not care whether profiles load immediately, or want fewer background apps. In that case, you can open iCUE only when you need to update firmware or change device settings.

If your Corsair cooler or fan controller depends on iCUE for custom behavior, be more cautious. Disabling startup may cause the hardware to fall back to its stored or default profile.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

High usage is usually caused by hardware polling, RGB effects, sensor monitoring, plugin conflicts or a stuck device/service. Firmware update checks and device detection can also make usage spike for a while after sign-in.

Try closing and reopening iCUE, disconnecting and reconnecting the affected Corsair device, and checking for app or firmware updates from Corsair. If usage stays high, test whether it drops when you disable complex lighting effects or reduce monitoring features.

If icue.exe is using a lot of CPU constantly and the file is not signed by Corsair, investigate it instead of assuming it is the real app.

How to Disable or Remove It

If you only want to stop it launching automatically, disable its startup entry rather than uninstalling it. On Windows, you can disable its startup item from Task Manager or a startup tool. On macOS, remove or disable its login or launch item if one is present.

If you no longer use Corsair hardware, uninstalling iCUE is reasonable. Use the normal app removal method for your OS, then restart and confirm no Corsair background items remain.

Do not delete random Corsair folders by hand unless the normal uninstall has already been completed.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show whether iCUE is set to start automatically and let you disable the startup item without uninstalling the app. On Windows, Startup Manager can also show the startup source and boot impact when available.

If iCUE seems heavy, Kudu's Performance Monitor can confirm whether icue.exe is actually the process using CPU or memory, and whether usage drops after you close it. If you suspect a fake copy, Kudu's Malware Scanner can help check for suspicious persistence or known bad patterns, but it complements your antivirus rather than replacing it.

Frequently asked questions

Will disabling Corsair iCUE at startup break my PC?
No. iCUE is not required for Windows or macOS to run. You may lose automatic loading of Corsair lighting, macros, fan settings or other device profiles until you open it.
Do I need Corsair iCUE for my Corsair keyboard or mouse to work?
Basic input should still work without iCUE. You usually need iCUE for advanced features like RGB control, macros, remaps and firmware updates.
Why does Corsair iCUE come back after I close it?
It may have a startup item or background service that relaunches it at sign-in. Disable the startup entry if you do not want it opening automatically.
