What Is HP Smart?

HP Smart is HP's app for setting up, managing and using HP printers and scanners. On Windows and macOS, it is commonly used to add a printer, check printer status, scan documents, print files, and access HP account or cloud features tied to supported devices.

It is not part of Windows or macOS itself. If you use an HP printer, the app can be useful, but it is an accessory app for the device rather than a core system component.

Is It Safe?

Yes, HP Smart is generally safe when it is the real app from HP Inc. If you installed it from HP or your platform's official app store, that is a good sign.

If you want to verify it, check that the app is signed by HP Inc. On Windows, open the file location from Task Manager or the app shortcut, then check the file's Digital Signatures tab in Properties. On macOS, you can check the app in Finder and review its developer signature in system security details or with Gatekeeper tools.

If a file named hpsmart.exe is running from an unusual folder, lacks a valid HP signature, or appears alongside other suspicious activity, investigate it rather than trusting the name alone.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

Usually, yes. For most people, HP Smart is safe to disable at startup.

Disabling it normally just stops the app from opening automatically or sitting in the background. You should still be able to open HP Smart when you want to print, scan or manage the printer. Some convenience features, such as faster access to printer status or notifications, may not appear until you launch the app.

Keep it enabled only if you rely on its background notifications or frequently use HP Smart features right after signing in.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

HP Smart may use more CPU or memory than expected when it is:

  • searching for printers on the network
  • syncing printer status or account features
  • stuck after a failed update or sign-in
  • handling a scan preview or print job
  • affected by a printer connection problem

If usage stays high, close and reopen the app first. Then check whether the printer is offline, disconnected or repeatedly reconnecting. Updating HP Smart and your printer drivers can also help.

If the app keeps consuming resources in the background even when you are not using it, disabling its startup entry is reasonable. If needed, you can also end the process and launch it again later.

How to Disable or Remove It

On Windows, disable it from Settings > Apps > Startup or from Task Manager's startup section. You can also uninstall HP Smart from Settings > Apps if you do not use it.

On macOS, remove it from Login Items if it appears there. To remove the app completely, delete HP Smart from Applications using the normal macOS app removal method.

If you still need to print, make sure your printer continues to work with the standard driver or your preferred print path before uninstalling the app.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show whether HP Smart is set to launch at sign-in and lets you disable or remove that startup item without digging through system menus. If HP Smart is using too much CPU or memory, Kudu's Performance Monitor can confirm the process involved and help you stop it by PID if needed.

On Windows, Kudu can also help you review related startup entries and separate HP Smart from other HP utilities that may be loading in the background.
