What Is ExpressVPN?

ExpressVPN is a virtual private network (VPN) app for Windows and macOS. It creates an encrypted connection between your device and ExpressVPN's servers, which can help protect traffic on public Wi-Fi, hide your IP address from websites, and let you choose a different server location.

On Windows, expressvpn.exe is the desktop app process. The app may also install background components so it can connect quickly, update itself, or apply network features such as a kill switch.

Is It Safe?

Usually, yes — if it is the real ExpressVPN app installed by you or your organization. The expected publisher is ExpressVPN.

If you did not install it, or if the file looks suspicious, verify it before trusting it:

  • In Task Manager, right-click expressvpn.exe and choose Open file location.
  • Check that the file is inside the ExpressVPN program folder, not a random temp or downloads folder.
  • Open Properties > Digital Signatures and confirm the signer is ExpressVPN.

A real VPN app is not malware just because it changes network settings. But if the file has no valid signature, appears in an unusual location, or keeps reinstalling itself without your consent, investigate further.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

Usually, optional.

Keep it enabled at startup if you want your VPN available immediately after sign-in, or if you rely on it for privacy on every network. Some people also prefer it to start automatically so they do not forget to connect.

Disable it at startup if you only use the VPN occasionally. In most cases, the app will still work normally when you open it manually later.

If you use features like auto-connect or a kill switch, disabling startup may leave you briefly unprotected until you launch the app yourself.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

ExpressVPN should usually stay fairly light when idle. Higher usage can happen when:

  • it is connecting or reconnecting to a server
  • it is downloading or applying an update
  • your network is unstable and the app keeps retrying
  • VPN traffic is heavy, especially during downloads or streaming
  • another network or security tool is conflicting with it

If usage stays high for a long time, disconnect and reconnect, reboot the device, and make sure the app is up to date. If the process keeps using a lot of CPU while disconnected and idle, check the file location and signature to confirm it is the genuine app.

How to Disable or Remove It

On Windows, you can usually disable ExpressVPN from its own settings or from the app's startup entry. You can also uninstall it from Installed apps in Settings.

On macOS, check Login Items in System Settings if the app starts when you sign in. If you want to remove it completely, uninstall the app using its uninstaller if provided, or remove it from Applications and then review any remaining login item or background permission entries.

If you remove a VPN, your internet connection should return to normal, but any ExpressVPN-specific network features will stop working.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show whether ExpressVPN is linked to a startup item and let you disable that item without uninstalling the app. On Windows, Startup Manager checks Run entries, Startup folder items and scheduled tasks; on macOS, it checks Launch Agents.

If ExpressVPN seems busy, Kudu's Performance Monitor can show its CPU and memory use and help you compare it with other processes. If you are unsure whether the file is legitimate, Kudu's Malware Scanner can add another check for suspicious persistence or known bad patterns, though it does not replace your antivirus.

Frequently asked questions

Will disabling ExpressVPN at startup uninstall it?
No. It only stops the app from launching automatically when you sign in. You can still open and use it manually.
Should a VPN always start with Windows or macOS?
Not always. Enable startup if you want protection immediately on every network. Disable it if you only use the VPN occasionally.
Is high CPU use from ExpressVPN normal?
Short spikes can be normal while connecting, updating, or handling heavy traffic. Constant high usage while idle or disconnected is not typical and should be checked.
