What Is EpicGamesLauncher?

Epic Games Launcher is the desktop app for the Epic Games Store. It lets you buy, install, launch and update games, manage your library, and install Unreal Engine tools.

On Windows and macOS, it may add itself to startup so it can sign you in, check for updates, and keep game services ready in the background. That is convenient if you use Epic often, but it is not required for the OS.

Is It Safe?

Usually, yes. Epic Games Launcher is legitimate software from Epic Games, Inc. Kudu Cloud data also classifies it as generally safe.

If you want to verify it, check that the app opens from a normal Epic Games install location rather than a random temp or downloads folder. On Windows, right-click the process in Task Manager, open the file location, then check the file's digital signature in Properties. If the file is in an unusual location or the signature is missing, investigate further.

The launcher itself is not a system component. Disabling it at startup will not break Windows or macOS.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

For most people, yes if you want fewer background apps when you sign in. Epic Games Launcher is optional at startup.

Disable it if you do not need automatic game updates, background sign-in, or store notifications right after boot. Leave it enabled if you regularly play Epic games and want downloads or updates to begin as soon as you log in.

Your games should still work normally when you launch Epic manually. Kudu Cloud data for this item shows high boot impact on 0% of devices that have it, so this is usually more about reducing background clutter than fixing a major startup slowdown.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

Common reasons include downloading or patching a game, verifying files, updating the launcher, syncing cloud saves, or rendering the store interface.

If usage stays high when nothing is downloading, close the launcher fully and reopen it. Also check whether a game update is stuck. On Windows, Kudu's Performance Monitor can show whether the launcher is the main source of CPU or memory use and lets you link the process back to its startup entry.

If the process keeps reappearing after you close it, look for an in-app setting that starts the launcher with the system. I am not certain of the exact setting name because it can change between versions.

How to Disable or Remove It

On Windows, you can disable the startup entry from Task Manager's Startup apps page, Windows Settings, or Kudu's Startup Manager. Kudu can also show the Run key entry if it was added under your user account.

On macOS, disable its login item in System Settings or remove its Launch Agent entry if one exists. If you no longer use Epic at all, uninstall the launcher from the normal apps list instead of deleting files by hand.

If you remove it from startup, you can still open Epic Games Launcher whenever you want to play or update a game.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu can show the exact startup source for Epic Games Launcher, disable or remove the entry, and link it to the running process if it is active in the background. If the launcher seems busy, Kudu's Performance Monitor helps confirm whether it is actually using CPU, memory, disk, or network resources before you decide to close it.

If you uninstall Epic later, Kudu can also help clean leftover launcher caches for supported apps after review, without touching saved passwords, browser history, or other unrelated data.
