What Is CurseForge?

CurseForge is a game mod manager and add-on platform published by Overwolf Ltd. People commonly use it to browse, install, update and manage mods, modpacks and game add-ons for supported games such as Minecraft and World of Warcraft.

On Windows, curseforge.exe is the desktop app process. On macOS, you may see the CurseForge app in Login Items if it is set to open automatically. It is not part of Windows or macOS, and your computer does not need it to boot normally.

Is It Safe?

Usually, yes. CurseForge itself is a legitimate app from Overwolf Ltd. If you installed it on purpose and it opens the mod manager you expect, it is normally safe.

Still, treat any unexpected startup app with caution. Check that the file really belongs to CurseForge: on Windows, right-click the process in Task Manager or Kudu and open its file location, then check its digital signature in Properties if needed. If the file is in an unusual folder, has no valid signature, or the app appeared without you installing it, investigate further.

The bigger risk with CurseForge is usually not the launcher itself, but what it downloads or manages. Mods and add-ons are third-party content, so only install them from sources you trust.

Should I Disable It at Startup?

In most cases, yes, you can disable it at startup.

CurseForge does not need to run all the time unless you want it ready in the background for mod updates, syncing or quick launching. Disabling startup will not uninstall it, and you can still open it manually when you want to manage mods or launch supported games.

Leave it enabled only if you use it often and prefer the convenience. If you rarely open it, disabling startup is the simpler choice.

Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?

CurseForge may use more CPU, memory or disk activity while it is updating itself, checking installed modpacks, scanning game instances, downloading files or unpacking updates. That can be normal for short periods.

If usage stays high for a long time, common causes include a stuck update, a large modpack, repeated background checks, or another related app process. Close CurseForge fully and reopen it. If that does not help, update it or remove and reinstall it from the official source.

If you see high usage when you are not using it, that is another good reason to disable it at startup and launch it only when needed.

How to Disable or Remove It

On Windows, you can disable CurseForge from Task Manager's Startup apps page, Windows Settings, or Kudu's Startup Manager if it appears there. Some apps also have their own setting to launch at sign-in.

On macOS, check System Settings > Login Items and turn it off there if listed. CurseForge may also have an in-app option to open at login.

To remove it completely, uninstall CurseForge through Windows installed apps or the normal macOS app removal method. If you still want your mods, check the app first so you know where your game data and modpacks are stored before uninstalling.

Where Kudu Helps

Kudu helps you decide whether CurseForge is worth keeping at startup. Use Startup Manager to disable it without uninstalling it. If the app feels heavy, Performance Monitor can show its CPU and memory use and help you confirm whether curseforge.exe is the process causing the load.

If you want to remove it, Kudu can also help you review related startup entries afterward so nothing unnecessary keeps launching in the background.

Frequently asked questions

Will disabling CurseForge at startup break my games?
Usually no. It only stops CurseForge from opening automatically when you sign in. You can still launch it manually when you need to manage mods or updates.
Is CurseForge required for Minecraft or World of Warcraft to run?
No, not for the operating system or for every game launch. It is mainly a management tool for mods and add-ons, though some modded setups are easier to maintain through it.
Should I end CurseForge if it is using a lot of CPU?
If it is stuck and you are not using it, ending the app is usually fine. Just expect any current downloads, updates or mod management tasks to stop.
