What Is Brave Update?
Brave Update is the background updater used by the Brave web browser on Windows. It is commonly installed with Brave and usually appears through Task Scheduler rather than the normal Startup folder or Run keys. Its job is to check for browser updates and install them quietly so Brave stays current.
On many systems this shows up as braveupdate.exe or a similarly named Brave updater component. If you use Brave, seeing an updater task is normal.
Kudu Cloud data: Brave Update was seen as a startup item on 23% of devices, and it was enabled on 83% of devices that had it. It had high boot impact on 0% of those devices.
Is It Safe?
Usually, yes — if it really belongs to Brave. The publisher in your entry is listed as Unknown, so it is worth checking before you trust it.
On a legitimate install, the file should be inside Brave's program files location, not in a temporary folder, Downloads, or a random user AppData path. In Task Scheduler, open the task, check the Actions tab, and see exactly which file it launches. Then right-click that file, open Properties, and check the Digital Signatures tab for a Brave-related signature.
If the file is in an unusual location, has no valid signature, or the task launches a script instead of a Brave updater file, treat it as suspicious and investigate further.
Should I Disable It at Startup?
For most people, disabling it is optional. Brave itself should still open and work. The trade-off is that the browser may not update automatically in the background, so you may need to update it manually from inside Brave or by reinstalling the latest version.
If you want the least background activity, disabling the scheduled updater is reasonable. If you prefer automatic security updates with less effort, leave it enabled.
Because Kudu Cloud data shows 0% high boot impact, this is usually not a startup item that meaningfully slows boot.
Why Is It Using High CPU or Memory?
Brave Update should normally use little CPU or memory and then exit. Short spikes can happen when it checks for updates, downloads a new version, or installs one.
If usage stays high, repeats often, or the process never exits, common causes include a stuck update, a damaged Brave install, or a fake file using a trusted-looking name. First check the file location and signature. If it is legitimate, updating or reinstalling Brave often fixes repeated updater activity.
Do not confuse a brief update check with malware, but do investigate if the process runs constantly.
How to Disable or Remove It
If Brave Update appears in Task Scheduler, open Task Scheduler, find the Brave update task, and choose Disable to stop it running automatically. That is safer than deleting it because you can turn it back on later.
If you want it gone completely, uninstalling Brave should remove its updater tasks. If the task remains after uninstalling, you can remove the leftover task manually.
Avoid deleting random files directly unless you have confirmed they belong to Brave and are no longer used.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu's Startup Manager can show Task Scheduler startup items like Brave Update and let you disable or remove them. On Windows, it also shows boot time impact, which is useful here because this item is usually low impact.
If Brave Update is using resources right now, Kudu's Performance Monitor can show its CPU and memory use and link the running process back to its startup entry. If the file path or behavior looks wrong, Kudu's Malware Scanner can help check for suspicious persistence and quarantine confirmed threats.
Frequently asked questions
- Will Brave stop working if I disable Brave Update?
- No. Brave should still open and browse normally. You may just need to update it manually instead of relying on background updates.
- Why does Brave Update show publisher as Unknown?
- That can happen if Windows is not showing signature details for the startup entry itself. Check the actual file launched by the scheduled task and review its Digital Signatures tab.
- Should I remove the task or just disable it?
- Disabling is usually the better first step. It stops the background task without making it harder to restore automatic updates later.
