What Causes This?

Windows Search can log some of the queries you type so Microsoft can improve search results, suggestions, and personalization features. This behavior is usually tied to Windows Search permissions, cloud content settings, and diagnostic data options in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

If these settings are enabled, your search activity may be used to tailor results or sent back for service improvement. Many users want to turn this off to reduce tracking, limit personalization, or keep local search behavior more private.

Common Symptoms

  • Search suggestions feel personalized based on past searches
  • Windows shows web or cloud-based search recommendations you do not want
  • Privacy settings mention search history, diagnostics, or personalization being enabled
  • You want to reduce how much search activity Windows records or sends to Microsoft
  • Search in the Start menu includes more online content than expected

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Open Windows Settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • If you are using Windows 11, click Privacy & security.
    • If you are using Windows 10, click Privacy.
  2. Turn off Search permissions and cloud content

    • In Windows 11, go to Search permissions.
    • In Windows 10, go to Search > Permissions & History.
    • Turn off options related to:
      • Cloud content search
      • Search history on this device
      • Microsoft account search history
    • If available, click Clear device search history.
  3. Disable personalized experiences

    • Go back to Privacy & security or Privacy.
    • Open Diagnostics & feedback.
    • Turn off Tailored experiences.
    • This stops Windows from using diagnostic data to personalize tips, ads, and recommendations, including some search-related suggestions.
  4. Reduce diagnostic data collection

    • In Diagnostics & feedback, set diagnostic data to the lowest available option:
      • Required diagnostic data on Windows 11
      • Basic on older Windows 10 versions, if shown
    • This helps limit data used for improving Microsoft services.
  5. Disable Bing and web results in Start search using Registry Editor

    • Press Windows + R, type regedit, then press Enter.
    • Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
    • If Explorer does not exist, right-click Windows, choose New > Key, and name it Explorer.
    • Right-click the right pane, choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
    • Name it DisableSearchBoxSuggestions.
    • Double-click it and set Value data to 1.
    • Click OK.
  6. Restart Windows Explorer or reboot your PC

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and choose Restart.
    • If the setting does not fully apply, restart your PC.
  7. Optional: Clear online privacy data from your Microsoft account

    • Visit the Microsoft privacy dashboard in your browser and sign in.
    • Review and clear stored search history if it is present.
    • This helps remove older cloud-synced search activity that local settings do not erase.
