What Causes This?

Find My Device is a Windows feature that uses your device’s location and your Microsoft account to help you locate a lost PC. It’s usually enabled when you sign in with a Microsoft account, turn on location services, or accept Windows’ default privacy settings during setup. If you want more privacy or don’t want your PC’s location tied to your account, you’ll need to turn the feature off manually.

Common Symptoms

  • Windows shows that Find My Device is turned on in Settings
  • Your PC location is being saved to your Microsoft account
  • You want to reduce location tracking and improve privacy
  • You see location services enabled even though you don’t use device tracking
  • You’re reviewing Windows privacy settings after setup or an update

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Open Windows Settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • In Windows 11, click Privacy & security in the left sidebar.
    • In Windows 10, click Update & Security.
  2. Go to the Find My Device setting

    • On Windows 11, click Find my device under Security.
    • On Windows 10, click Find my device in the left-hand menu.
  3. Turn off Find My Device

    • If the feature is enabled, click Change or use the toggle switch.
    • Set Save my device’s location periodically or Find my device to Off.
  4. Make sure location services are not forcing it to stay active

    • In Windows 11, go back to Privacy & security and click Location.
    • In Windows 10, go to Settings > Privacy > Location.
    • Turn Location services to Off if you don’t want Windows apps or services using your location at all.
  5. Check that you’re signed in with the right account

    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info.
    • If you’re using a Microsoft account, Find My Device can link location data to that account.
    • If privacy is your priority, you can switch to a local account by selecting Sign in with a local account instead and following the prompts.
  6. Verify the change

    • Return to the Find my device page in Settings.
    • Confirm it now says the feature is Off.
    • Restart your PC if the setting doesn’t update right away.
  7. If the option is grayed out, check for restrictions

    • Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and see if your PC is managed by an organization.
    • If it is, a workplace or school policy may control location and tracking settings.
    • On a personal PC, disconnect the work account if appropriate, then check the setting again.
