What Causes This?

The Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) is an optional telemetry feature that collects basic information about how you use Windows and some Microsoft features. On many PCs, it stays enabled because of default privacy settings, past setup choices, scheduled tasks, or Group Policy settings applied by Windows editions like Pro or by an organization. Even if you turned off some feedback options before, CEIP-related tasks can still remain active in Task Scheduler.

Common Symptoms

  • Windows continues sending usage or diagnostic data to Microsoft
  • Privacy settings don’t seem fully disabled
  • CEIP-related tasks appear in Task Scheduler
  • You want to reduce background data collection and telemetry
  • A work or school policy keeps re-enabling feedback settings

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Turn off optional diagnostic data in Settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
    • Set diagnostic data to the lowest available option on your version of Windows.
    • Turn off options like Improve inking and typing, Tailored experiences, and View diagnostic data if they are enabled.
  2. Disable CEIP tasks in Task Scheduler

    • Press Windows + S, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
    • In the left pane, go to: Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Customer Experience Improvement Program
    • In the middle pane, right-click these tasks if present and choose Disable:
      • Consolidator
      • KernelCeipTask
      • UsbCeip
    • Also check: Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience
    • Disable tasks such as Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser if you want to further reduce telemetry-related activity.
  3. Use Group Policy if you have Windows Pro or Enterprise

    • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
    • Go to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Internet Communication Management > Internet Communication settings
    • Find Turn off Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program.
    • Double-click it, select Enabled, then click Apply and OK.
    • Restart your PC.
  4. Use the Registry on Windows Home if Group Policy is unavailable

    • Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
    • Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows
    • If the key does not exist, create it.
    • Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value named CEIPEnable.
    • Set its value to 0.
    • Restart your PC.
  5. Check Feedback settings

    • Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
    • Set Feedback frequency to Never if that option is available.
    • This does not replace disabling CEIP tasks, but it helps reduce Microsoft prompts and feedback collection.
  6. Confirm the change

    • Reopen Task Scheduler and make sure the CEIP tasks still show as Disabled.
    • If they turn back on after a restart, a policy, management tool, or Windows update may be reapplying the setting.
