What Causes This?
If your search engine keeps changing on Windows, the usual cause is a browser hijacker or unwanted program that altered your browser settings without clear permission. This often happens after installing free software bundles, fake browser updates, suspicious extensions, or clicking misleading pop-ups.
In some cases, the change is caused by a sync setting, a managed browser policy, or leftover scheduled tasks and startup entries that keep reapplying the unwanted search provider even after you change it back.
Common Symptoms
- Your default search engine switches back after you reset it
- Searches from the address bar go to an unfamiliar site
- New tabs or the home page open to a search page you did not choose
- Unknown browser extensions appear without you installing them
- Pop-ups, redirects, or extra ads start showing in your browser
