What Causes This?

A browser homepage that keeps changing is usually caused by a browser hijacker, unwanted extension, or leftover software that changed your browser settings without clear permission. It can also happen after installing free apps bundled with toolbars, search add-ons, or “security” utilities that modify startup pages. In some cases, a sync feature in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox keeps restoring the bad setting from another device or old profile data.

Common Symptoms

  • Your homepage resets to an unfamiliar site after you change it back
  • Your default search engine changes along with the homepage
  • New tabs open to a page you did not choose
  • Strange extensions or toolbars appear in your browser
  • Pop-ups, redirects, or extra ads start showing up more often

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check your browser homepage and startup settings

    • In Chrome: open Chrome, click the three dots > Settings > On startup and Appearance.
    • In Edge: open Edge, click the three dots > Settings > Start, home, and new tabs.
    • In Firefox: open Firefox, click the three lines > Settings > Home.
    • Set your preferred homepage, remove any unknown pages, and save the changes.
  2. Remove suspicious browser extensions

    • In Chrome: go to chrome://extensions
    • In Edge: go to edge://extensions
    • In Firefox: go to about:addons
    • Remove anything you do not recognize, especially extensions related to search, coupons, PDF tools, “safe browsing,” or toolbars you did not intentionally install.
    • Restart the browser and check whether the homepage stays changed.
  3. Uninstall suspicious programs from Windows

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some versions of Windows).
    • Sort by Install date and look for recently added programs you do not trust.
    • Uninstall anything suspicious, especially browser assistants, search tools, download managers, or unknown “optimizer” apps.
    • Restart your PC after uninstalling.
  4. Disable startup apps that may restore the hijacker

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Click the Startup apps tab.
    • Look for unknown entries or software tied to the unwanted homepage.
    • Right-click suspicious items and choose Disable.
    • If you are unsure about an item, search its name before disabling it.
  5. Reset the browser if the problem keeps coming back

    • In Chrome: Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults
    • In Edge: Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values
    • In Firefox: type about:support in the address bar, then click Refresh Firefox
    • This removes unwanted changes, disables extensions, and resets startup behavior. You may need to sign back in afterward.
  6. Check sync settings

    • If the homepage changes again after signing in, browser sync may be restoring the bad setting.
    • Temporarily turn off sync in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, then set the homepage again.
    • If that fixes it, clear or review synced browser data before turning sync back on.
  7. Run a Windows Security scan

    • Press Windows + I > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
    • Click Quick scan first. If the issue continues, run a Full scan.
    • This can catch adware or unwanted software that keeps reapplying browser changes.
