What Causes This?

A network adapter that keeps resetting usually points to a driver problem, a bad power management setting, corrupted network configuration, or interference from VPN/security software. In some cases, Windows updates install a driver that does not work well with your specific Wi‑Fi or Ethernet hardware. Faulty hardware, overheating, or aggressive system cleanup tools can also cause the adapter to disconnect and reinitialize repeatedly.

Common Symptoms

  • Internet drops for a few seconds, then reconnects on its own
  • Wi‑Fi disappears and comes back, or Ethernet briefly shows as unplugged
  • You see messages like “Default gateway is not available” or “Network cable unplugged”
  • Device Manager shows the adapter restarting or reporting an error
  • Video calls, downloads, or online games keep disconnecting

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Restart the adapter and run the built-in troubleshooter

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
    • Under Network adapters, click Disable on your affected adapter, wait 10 seconds, then click Enable.
    • In Windows 11, go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Network and Internet.
  2. Turn off power saving for the adapter

    • Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
    • Expand Network adapters and double-click your Wi‑Fi or Ethernet adapter.
    • Open the Power Management tab.
    • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, then click OK.
    • If you are on Wi‑Fi, also go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Wireless Adapter Settings and set Power Saving Mode to Maximum Performance.
  3. Update or roll back the network driver

    • In Device Manager, right-click the adapter and select Properties.
    • Open the Driver tab.
    • Click Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    • If the problem started after a recent update, go back to the same Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver if available.
    • Restart your PC after either change.
  4. Reset the network stack

    • Press Start, type cmd, then right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
    • Run these commands one at a time:
      1. netsh winsock reset
      2. netsh int ip reset
      3. ipconfig /flushdns
      4. ipconfig /release
      5. ipconfig /renew
    • Restart your PC when finished.
  5. Check for software conflicts

    • Temporarily disable or uninstall any VPN, third-party firewall, or antivirus network filtering tool.
    • If the adapter stops resetting afterward, that software is likely interfering with the connection.
    • Reinstall the latest version of the software or leave it removed if you do not need it.
  6. Perform a full Windows network reset

    • Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
    • Click Network reset.
    • Select Reset now and confirm.
    • Your PC will restart, and Windows will reinstall network adapters and reset networking components to default settings.
  7. Check for hardware issues

    • If you use Wi‑Fi, test closer to the router or try a different band (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz).
    • If you use Ethernet, swap the cable and try another router or switch port.
    • If resets continue on only one PC after all software fixes, the adapter itself may be failing.
