What Causes This?
Most pop-ups on a Mac are caused by adware, spammy browser extensions, or website notification permissions that were allowed by mistake. In some cases, the issue comes from a browser setting change, a fake “update” installer, or unwanted apps that keep reopening ads in the background.
If pop-ups appear even when you are not actively browsing, that usually points to adware or a suspicious login item rather than a normal website ad. Browser junk, cached data, and leftover files can also keep the problem coming back after you close the window.
Common Symptoms

- You see fake virus alerts, prize messages, or “your Mac is infected” warnings

- The Mac feels slower, especially when the browser is open
