What Causes This?

Storage Sense only cleans a limited set of files, such as temporary files, some Recycle Bin items, and older Downloads files if you allow it. It often misses larger space hogs like leftover app data, old Windows update files, installer caches, game launchers, browser caches, and files stored in uncommon folders. In some cases, Storage Sense is also set to run too rarely, or its cleanup options are too conservative to make a noticeable difference.

Common Symptoms

  • Windows warns that your drive is low on space even after running Storage Sense
  • The C: drive keeps filling back up quickly
  • Storage Sense reports only a small amount of space recovered
  • Large folders are still taking up space, but Windows does not clearly show why
  • Updates, app installs, or game installs fail because there is not enough free space

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Run Storage Sense with all useful options enabled

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to System > Storage.
    • Turn on Storage Sense if it is off.
    • Click Storage Sense and review the options.
    • Set it to run Every month or During low free disk space.
    • Enable cleanup for Temporary files.
    • If you do not need them, set Recycle Bin and Downloads cleanup to remove older files after a set number of days.
  2. Use Temporary Files cleanup directly

    • In Settings > System > Storage, click Temporary files.
    • Let Windows scan the drive.
    • Check items you want to remove, such as:
      • Windows Update Cleanup
      • Delivery Optimization Files
      • DirectX Shader Cache
      • Temporary files
      • Thumbnails
    • Read the descriptions carefully and avoid deleting Downloads unless you are sure.
    • Click Remove files.
  3. Find what is actually using space

    • Go to Settings > System > Storage.
    • Open Show more categories if needed.
    • Check large categories like Apps & features, Other, Documents, and Pictures.
    • Click into the largest categories and look for unusually large apps, installers, archives, or folders you no longer need.
  4. Uninstall large apps and games you do not use

    • Press Windows + I, then go to Apps > Installed apps.
    • Sort by Size.
    • Remove apps, games, or utilities you no longer use.
    • Be careful not to uninstall drivers, security software, or programs you still need.
  5. Clean up system files with Disk Cleanup

    • Press Windows + S, type Disk Cleanup, and open it.
    • Select your C: drive.
    • Click Clean up system files.
    • Select items like Previous Windows installation(s), Windows Update Cleanup, and Temporary Windows installation files if available.
    • Click OK, then Delete Files.
  6. Check for large hidden folders manually

    • Open File Explorer with Windows + E.
    • Browse common space-heavy locations such as:
      • C:\Windows\Temp
      • C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Temp
      • C:\Users\YourName\Downloads
    • Delete only files you recognize as safe to remove, especially in temp folders.
    • Empty the Recycle Bin afterward.
  7. Restart and check free space again

    • Restart your PC to clear locked temporary files.
    • Go back to Settings > System > Storage and confirm whether free space has increased enough for updates or normal use.
