What Causes This?

A large download cache usually builds up when Windows, browsers, game launchers, and apps keep temporary copies of downloaded files after installation or updates. Over time, these cached files pile up in folders like Downloads, browser cache locations, Delivery Optimization, and app-specific temp directories.

This is more common on PCs with limited storage, frequent software updates, or large game and media downloads. In some cases, failed or interrupted downloads also leave behind partial files that Windows does not remove automatically.

Common Symptoms

  • Your C: drive keeps losing free space for no obvious reason
  • Windows Storage settings shows large amounts of temporary or cached data
  • Downloads, browser, or update folders are much larger than expected
  • Apps or Windows updates warn that there is not enough disk space
  • The PC feels slower when installing updates or downloading new files

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check what is using space in Storage settings

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to System > Storage.
    3. Review categories like Temporary files, Apps, Documents, and Other.
    4. Click Temporary files to see whether cached downloads, delivery files, or temp data are taking up space.
  2. Clean temporary files with Windows

    1. In Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, let Windows scan.
    2. Check items such as Temporary files, Delivery Optimization Files, DirectX Shader Cache, and Thumbnails.
    3. Be careful with Downloads — only select it if you are sure you do not need those files.
    4. Click Remove files.
  3. Delete old files from your Downloads folder

    1. Open File Explorer with Windows + E.
    2. Select Downloads from the left sidebar.
    3. Click Sort > Size or Sort > Date modified to find the biggest or oldest files.
    4. Delete installers, ZIP files, videos, or duplicate downloads you no longer need.
    5. Empty the Recycle Bin afterward to actually free the space.
  4. Clear browser download and cache data

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete.
    3. Choose a time range such as All time.
    4. Select Cached images and files. If needed, also review your browser’s download history or default download folder.
    5. Confirm the cleanup.

For Edge or Chrome, this removes cached web content that can grow surprisingly large over time.

  5. Remove Windows Update download cache

    1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    2. Find Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop.
    3. Open File Explorer and go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.
    4. Delete the files inside this folder.
    5. Go back to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
  6. Clear Delivery Optimization files

    1. Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files again.
    2. Check Delivery Optimization Files if available.
    3. Click Remove files.

These are update-sharing cache files that Windows can keep after updates are installed.

  7. Use Disk Cleanup for older cache files

    1. Press Windows, type Disk Cleanup, and open it.
    2. Select your C: drive.
    3. Click Clean up system files.
    4. Check categories like Temporary Internet Files, Downloaded Program Files, Temporary files, and Windows Update Cleanup.
    5. Click OK, then Delete Files.
