What Causes This?

Discord usually gets stuck in an update loop when its local update files or cache become corrupted. In some cases, Windows permissions prevent Discord from replacing old files during the update, so it keeps retrying forever. Security software, a broken installation, or leftover files in AppData can also block the updater from finishing properly.

Common Symptoms

  • Discord shows “Updating” or a spinning update screen that never finishes
  • The app closes and reopens repeatedly without loading
  • Discord starts to update every time you launch it
  • You see update failed messages or a blank gray screen after restarting
  • Reinstalling Discord seems to help only temporarily

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Fully close Discord

    • Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager
    • In the Processes tab, find Discord
    • Select it and click End task
    • Also end any related processes like Update.exe if you see them
  2. Delete Discord cache and update files

    • Press Windows+R, type %appdata%, and press Enter
    • Open the Discord folder
    • Delete the folders named Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache
    • Go back one level, then in the address bar click AppData
    • Open Local > Discord
    • Delete the **app-*` folders if present, along with any SquirrelTemp folder
  3. Remove Discord completely from AppData

    • Press Windows+R, type %localappdata%, and press Enter
    • Delete the Discord folder
    • Press Windows+R again, type %appdata%, and press Enter
    • Delete the Discord folder there too
    • This clears leftover updater files that often cause the loop
  4. Restart your PC

    • Click Start > Power > Restart
    • This makes sure locked files and updater processes are cleared before reinstalling
  5. Download a fresh copy of Discord

    • Open your browser and go to the official Discord download page
    • Download the latest Windows installer
    • Save it somewhere easy to find, like your Downloads folder
  6. Run the installer as administrator

    • Right-click the Discord installer
    • Select Run as administrator
    • If Windows shows a User Account Control prompt, click Yes
    • Let the installation finish, then launch Discord
  7. Check if antivirus or Controlled Folder Access is blocking Discord

    • Open Windows Security
    • Go to Virus & threat protection > Ransomware protection
    • If Controlled folder access is on, click Allow an app through Controlled folder access
    • Add Discord if it is being blocked
    • If you use third-party antivirus, temporarily disable it and try the update again
  8. Try installing Discord in a clean boot environment if it still loops

    • Press Windows+R, type msconfig, and press Enter
    • Open the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services
    • Click Disable all
    • Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager
    • Disable non-essential startup apps, restart your PC, and reinstall Discord
    • If this works, another background app was interfering with the updater
