WSL Cleaner Performance Caches
WSL Cleaner stores Chromium and Electron performance caches under its profile to speed up startup and rendering, including V8 compiled script data in Code Cache, GPU process caches in GPUCache, and Dawn Graphite and WebGPU shader artifacts in DawnGraphiteCache and DawnWebGPUCache. Those files are regenerated as the app loads windows and initializes its UI, but they can become stale after an app or graphics driver update. Kudu removes only these rebuildable performance caches, leaving your WSL Cleaner data, preferences, accounts, and saved history untouched.
Why clean WSL Cleaner Performance Caches?
- Invalidated V8 bytecode in Code Cache after a WSL Cleaner update can make launches hang briefly on a white or blank window before the cache is rebuilt
- Old GPUCache entries from a previous graphics driver version can cause rendering glitches, black panels, or flickering until Chromium recreates the cache
- Stale DawnGraphiteCache shader blobs can produce jerky scrolling or delayed UI redraws when WSL Cleaner switches to newer GPU rendering paths
- Outdated DawnWebGPUCache data may trigger broken hardware-accelerated effects or a window that appears but does not paint correctly on first open
- Oversized Electron cache folders can waste hundreds of megabytes in the roaming profile, which users notice as unexplained AppData growth on a small system drive
- Corrupt cache records can force repeated recompilation of scripts and shaders, showing up as slower cold starts and higher CPU usage each time the app opens
