Setup Logs

Windows Setup writes detailed installation and upgrade logs under %WinDir%\Panther while installing feature updates, performing in-place upgrades, running OOBE, and processing rollback or migration steps. This folder commonly accumulates setupact.log, setuperr.log, BlueBox.log, CompatData XML inventories, rollback traces, and temporary diagnostic files that are useful for troubleshooting but often linger long after the upgrade has finished. Kudu removes old Panther setup logs and temporary setup diagnostics without touching personal files, accounts, passwords, or current Windows configuration.

Why clean Setup Logs?

  • Leftover Panther logs from previous feature updates can consume hundreds of megabytes or more, and users usually notice this as unexplained Windows folder growth on the system drive
  • Old setupact.log, setuperr.log, and rollback traces can make troubleshooting harder because support tools and manual searches surface outdated upgrade failures instead of the most recent one
  • Stale CompatData and appraiser output from earlier upgrade attempts can clutter setup diagnostics, so users comparing compatibility results may see conflicting hardware or app warnings from old runs
  • Repeated failed upgrades often append new traces beside old Panther data, leaving a confusing mix of rollback and success records that makes it difficult to tell which error actually matches the latest Windows Update attempt
  • After a major Windows upgrade completes, Panther often keeps temporary diagnostic artifacts that no longer serve normal operation, and users notice disk cleanup utilities reporting significant reclaimable system space
  • Panther cleanup is especially useful on small SSDs where residual setup diagnostics reduce free space enough to trigger low-storage warnings before the next feature update can download and stage properly
