Power Efficiency Reports

Windows stores Power Efficiency Diagnostics output in ProgramData after running energy and battery analysis tools such as powercfg /energy and related diagnostics. These reports include HTML summaries, XML data sets, trace-derived diagnostics, and supporting assets that accumulate as repeated scans are generated for troubleshooting power drain, sleep, and device wake issues. Kudu removes old Power Efficiency Diagnostics report files so stale diagnostic output does not pile up, without touching power plans, device settings, accounts, or saved passwords.

Why clean Power Efficiency Reports?

  • Repeated powercfg energy and battery diagnostics leave behind HTML, XML, and trace-derived report files that steadily consume space in ProgramData, which users notice as growing system storage use after troubleshooting sessions
  • Old reports preserve warnings from hardware, drivers, or sleep states that have already been fixed, so opening a previous report can make it look like current power problems still exist
  • Multiple similarly named diagnostics from different dates make it easy to read the wrong snapshot, leading to confusion when the report shows outdated battery drain, wake timer, or USB suspend findings
  • Enterprise or shared PCs can accumulate months of diagnostic exports in the Power Efficiency Diagnostics folder, cluttering administrative maintenance and making current report collection harder to review
  • After driver, firmware, or Windows updates, previously generated efficiency reports no longer reflect the current power stack, and users may keep chasing issues they can no longer reproduce
  • Some reports embed detailed device, sleep, and usage timing information from past diagnostics, so clearing them removes obsolete troubleshooting artifacts while leaving actual power configuration intact
